NASA IDs 90 pct. of largest near-Earth asteroids (AP)

LOS ANGELES ? If you're worried about a killer asteroid wiping out Earth, NASA has some good news.

The space agency said Thursday it has identified more than 90 percent of giant near-Earth asteroids, including ones as big as the one thought to have killed the dinosaurs eons ago. None poses a danger to the planet in the next several centuries.

"We know now where most of them are and where most of them are going. That really has reduced our risk" of an impact, said Amy Mainzer of the NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory.

NASA researchers also downgraded their estimate of the number of medium-sized asteroids, saying there are 44 percent fewer than previously believed. The downside is that scientists have yet to find many of these mid-sized asteroids, which could destroy a metropolitan city.

"Fewer does not mean none," Mainzer said. "There are still tens of thousands out there that are left to find."

The updated census comes from data from NASA's sky-mapping spacecraft named Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer, or WISE, which launched in 2009 to seek out near-Earth objects, galaxies, stars and other cosmic targets.

Unlike previous sky surveys, WISE has sensitive instruments that can pick out both dark and light objects, allowing it to get the most accurate count yet of near-Earth asteroids. The spacecraft takes a small sample of asteroids of varying sizes and then estimates how large the population would be.

For the largest asteroids ? bigger than 3,300 feet across ? NASA said 911 of the 981 thought to exist have been found. None poses a threat to Earth in the near future, the space agency said.

Previous estimates put the number of medium-sized asteroids at 35,000, but WISE data indicate there are about 19,500 between 330 and 3,300 feet wide. Only about 5,200 have been found and scientists said there is still a lot of work left to identify the potentially hazardous ones.

Results were published in the Astrophysical Journal.

WISE is not equipped to detect the more than a million smallest asteroids that could cause damage if they impact Earth. The spacecraft recently ran out of coolant and is currently in hibernation.

By locating most of the giant asteroids, NASA has fulfilled a goal set by Congress in 1998. More recently, the space agency has been asked to find 90 percent of asteroids that are at least 460 feet in diameter ? slightly smaller than the Superdome in New Orleans ? by 2020.

Don Yeomans, who heads NASA's Near-Earth Object Program Office, said that goal is about 35 percent complete.

Hijack fugitive enjoyed idyllic life in Portugal

A 1970s militant who carried out one of the most brazen hijackings in U.S. history lived for decades in an idyllic Portuguese hamlet near a stunning beach with his Portuguese wife and two children, his neighbors said Wednesday.

George Wright, 68, worked odd jobs around Almocageme, 28 miles west of Lisbon, most recently employed as a nightclub bouncer, said two neighbors who spoke on condition of anonymity because they feared being ostracized for speaking out.

Wright, taken into custody Monday at the request of the U.S. government , also spoke very good Portuguese, they said, adding that his children were now in their 20s.

A woman who answered the door at his home in Almocageme told an Associated Press correspondent she had no comment and then closed the door.

Wright used the alias of Jose Luis Jorge dos Santos, U.S. officials said, and townspeople in Almocageme knew him as "Jorge" and "George."

Almocageme gas station attendant Ricardo Salvador said Wright had business cards which gave his first name as George and many locals called him that. Most locals questioned by the AP said they assumed Wright was African, not American.

"He was a very nice guy," Salvador said. "He used to wave as he drove past and I'd shout out, 'Hey, George!'"

A fingerprint on a Portuguese ID card was the break that led a U.S. fugitive task force to Wright, who was arrested by Portuguese authorities and is being detained in Lisbon.

Wright was convicted of the 1962 murder of gas station owner Walter Patterson, a decorated World War II veteran who was shot during a robbery at his business in Wall, New Jersey.

Eight years into his 15- to 30-year prison term, Wright and three other men escaped from the Bayside State Prison farm in Leesburg, New Jersey, on Aug. 19, 1970.

The FBI said Wright became affiliated with an underground militant group, the Black Liberation Army, and lived in a "communal family" with several of its members in Detroit.

1972: Dressed as a priest, bold hijacking
In 1972, Wright ? dressed as a priest and using an alias ? hijacked a Delta flight from Detroit to Miami with four other BLA members and three children, including Wright's companion and their 2-year-old daughter.

After releasing the 86 other passengers in exchange for a $1 million ransom ? delivered by an FBI agent wearing only swim trunks, as per the hijackers' demands ? the hijackers forced the plane to fly to Boston. There an international navigator was taken aboard, and the plane was flown to Algeria, where the hijackers sought asylum.

Watch WNBC's full report, including archival footage of hijacking

The group was taken in by American writer and activist Eldridge Cleaver, who had been permitted by Algeria's Socialist government to open an office of the Black Panther Movement in that country in 1970. The Algerian president at the time professed sympathy for what he viewed as worldwide liberation struggles.

The hijackers had identified themselves to the airplane passengers as a Black Panther group, police said at the time. They said the hijackers smoked marijuana continuously during the flight.

At the request of the American government, Algerian officials returned the plane and the money to the U.S. They briefly detained the hijackers before allowing them to stay. Coverage of the hijackers' stay in Algeria said their movements were restricted, and the president ignored their calls for asylum and requests to return the ransom money to them.

1976: Wright's associates arrested
The group eventually made its way to France, where Wright's associates were tracked down, arrested, tried and convicted in Paris in 1976. The French government, however, refused to extradite them to the U.S., where they would have faced longer sentences.

Wright remained at large, and his case was among the top priorities when the New York-New Jersey Fugitive Task Force was formed in 2002, according to Michael Schroeder, a spokesman for the U.S. Marshals Service, who worked with New Jersey's FBI and other agencies on the task force.

The New Jersey Department of Corrections (DOC) brought along all its old escape cases when the task force began operating, Schroeder said, and investigators started the case anew.

They reviewed reports from the 1970s, interviewed Wright's victims and the pilots of the plane he hijacked. They had age-enhanced sketches made and tried to track down any communications he may have made with family in the U.S.

An address in Portugal was one of several on a list of places they wanted to check out, but Schroeder said there was nothing about it that made it seem especially promising.

"It was another box to get checked, so to speak," he said.

That changed last week, when details started falling into place with the help of Portuguese authorities.

"They have a national ID registry," Schroeder said. "They pulled that. That confirmed his print matched the prints with the DOC. The sketch matched the picture on his ID card."

By the weekend, U.S. authorities were on a plane to Portugal. And Monday, Portuguese police staking out Wright's home found him.

Justice Department spokeswoman Laura Sweeney said Wright was arrested for purposes of extradition on the New Jersey homicide charge. He would serve the remainder of his sentence if returned to the U.S., she said.

What about the nuclear option for spaceflight?

For weeks to come, NASA will be working with the aerospace industry on its plans to develop its new super-sized rocket for missions back to the moon, the nearest Lagrangian point, asteroids, Mars and other ports of call in deep space.

The agency will be working with the latest technology, as well as innovations yet to be invented. Some even dare to whisper rocketry's N-word: nuclear.

But first, it seems logical to assume that NASA will use what it has.?

For the initial flight tests, NASA?s new heavy-lift rocket will use two five-segment versions of the space shuttle?s solid-rockets.? The solids will be strapped to a tank structure equipped with shuttle-style main engines, forming the basic ?core stage.?

The second stage will use the J-2X engine, an updated version of the upper-stage rocket that powered the Saturn 1B and Saturn V rockets in the 1960s and '70s. The system was used for 16 manned space missions, including nine Apollo flights that carried crews to the moon and back.

When the last Apollo moon ship made its final voyage in 1972, few people would have guessed that the gap in deep-space exploration would last so long. Here's how the scene played out, as described in "Moon Shot," the book I wrote with NASA chief astronaut Deke Slayton and Alan Shepard, America's first astronaut and one of only 12 men who walked on the lunar landscape:

The end of the space race: An excerpt from 'Moon Shot'
The last man on the moon, Gene Cernan, paused for a final look at the black beauty of the world about him.? He had a message to send home before departing.??"As I take these last steps from the surface for some time in the future to come, I?d just like a record that America?s challenge of today has forged man?s destiny of tomorrow.? And as we leave the moon and Taurus-Littrow, we leave as we came, and, God willing, we shall return, with peace and hope for all mankind."

It will be 39 years this December since he spoke those words.? No American, no earthly being has yet returned to the moon. Sadly, no one will again for some time to come.

Within a period of four years, 24 American astronauts, some twice, sailed through the vacuum from Earth to the moon.? Twelve out of those 24 rode their landers down to the lunar surface, walked and drove through the dust and rocks of the small world.

  1. 'Moon Shot' revisited

To commemorate the 50th anniversary of the first spaceflight, "Moon Shot: The Inside Story of America?s Apollo Moon Landings," is being republished as an enhanced e-book, including embedded video and fresh stories about America?s greatest space adventures. Print copies are also available.

Co-authors Alan Shepard and Deke Slayton were at the very heart of America?s efforts to tame space. No one was more qualified to recount the victories won and the defeats endured by a small but remarkable group of humans who took aim at outer space. And no one is more qualified to update this seminal work than NBC News correspondent Jay Barbree, the only journalist to cover every spaceflight flown by astronauts from Cape Canaveral.

In the new edition, Barbree includes tales from the Apollo missions that have never been told before, and offers his thoughts on the lack of concrete plans for America's space program today. Excerpts from the updated edition of "Moon Shot" are being published exclusively on msnbc.com.

Had the Soviet Union sustained its early lead in power and technology over the United States, the number of humans going might have increased greatly.? It was a fierce competition, and the Soviets went all-out in their desperate attempts to lead the human race to another solar body, small though it might be and devoid of life.? The Russians went through a series of devastating rocket explosions and suffered equal costly failures after reaching earth orbit.

Just two weeks before the last Apollo departed for the moon, the Russians were down to a last-gasp hope that their mammoth N-1 rocket, even more powerful than Wernher von Braun?s spectacularly successful Saturn V, would enable them, at least, to reach the moon during the same period.

It was not to be.? The fourth launch of the N-1, intended to fire a large and heavy unmanned lunar lander directly to the moon in a rehearsal for a manned flight, was ripped apart by a series of violent explosions as it climbed through the atmosphere.? When the wreckage tumbled back to earth, it sounded the death knell of the Russian manned lunar effort.

Bitter and frustrated, the Soviet government insisted it had never been in the moon race.? History records otherwise.? Several Russian manned landers became dust collectors in remote hangars.? The rocket stages and enormous fuel tanks of the leftover N-1s were hammered into storage sheds and playgrounds for children.

Reinventing the rocket
Thirty-six years after Gene Cernan left the moon, the Obama administration swept into office and brought with it those who insisted on reinventing the wheel. They kicked everything that did work, as well as the things that didn?t, out the door ? leaving them with paper drawings.? For nearly three years this resulted in massive confusion, infighting and tortuous delays between those from blue and red states.

The ones who plucked sanity from this ungodly mess proved to be the ones who had been sanely chosen to head America?s space agency.

Charles Bolden, an African-American born in South Carolina, shook off the shackles of segregation in a Jim Crow south, and with the help of a congressman from Detroit entered the U.S. Naval Academy, walking in the footsteps of astronauts Alan Shepard and Tom Stafford.? Bolden became a major general in the Marine Corps after proving his mettle as a test pilot and space shuttle commander. He became NASA's administrator in 2009.

Bolden laced up his combat boots and stomped his way into the middle of the disorder with his second-in-command, Deputy Administrator Lori Garver, who first dipped her toe in Space Lake as an intern for John Glenn's presidential campaign in 1984.

Bolden quieted the fight over NASA's future and reached into his bag of ?things that work.? Satisfying the majority, he and Associate Administrator William Gerstenmaier came up with a heavy-lift deep-space rocket derived from Apollo, the space shuttle and the canceled Constellation back-to-the-moon program.

NASA's plan calls for using proven rockets and facilities ? and most importantly, the space agency's experienced workers ? to build a new system for deep-space exploration. The Space Launch System, or SLS, is projected to cost taxpayers $3 billion a year, about $1 billion a year less than the space shuttle, through 2017 when the first test flight is scheduled to take place.

There?s little doubt that NASA can build a heavy-lift rocket to fly astronauts beyond Earth orbit, but can the agency build one that can reach deep-space ports without going nuclear?

Nuclear perspective
"Nuclear propulsion should be included when considering deep-space travel," said Princeton physicist Gene H. McCall, retired chief scientist for the Air Force Space Command and a senior scientist at Los Alamos National Laboratory. "The engines could also be used for years as a power source for establishing a base on the moon or Mars, or any long-term base where gathering power from the sun would be difficult.?

McCall said the arguments over nuclear space propulsion "are usually emotional rather than technical.?

While I was growing up on the family farm, my father tried for years to bring electricity to our rural area of Georgia, only to be met with protests motivated by fear of electrocution and fires. Irrational fear of the unknown has been with us since the dawn of humanity. But consider this: You can count the deaths in this country from nuclear energy on one hand. Meanwhile, 40,000 Americans die every year on our highways, yet practically no one hesitates to ride in an automobile.

Just ask someone what was the worst nuclear accident in America?s history. Most will tell you it was Three Mile Island in 1979.? But when you follow up by asking, "How many died?" ... you are met with a wide stare.

Little is really known by the public about nuclear energy, let alone nuclear propulsion. McCall was involved in closing the Rover and Nerva experimental programs at Los Alamos, and in transferring people and equipment to appropriate places in the nascent laser program, which had strong nuclear connections.? In the process, he became very familiar with the nuclear rocket program and its prospects.

"Nuclear fuel has a very high energy density," McCall said.? "One can design a nuclear rocket with one-half the mass of a liquid or a solid [rocket] and double its payload while cutting travel time by half."

    4. Rocket to lift off, and land, on launch pad

The nuclear rocket operates by heating liquid hydrogen and pushing it out a nozzle at the rear of the reactor.? The low molecular weight exhaust and high velocity give a high specific impulse. The power is precisely controllable.

"Specific impulse is the most important quality of a rocket?s fuel," McCall explained. "It tells you how fast you can go and how efficient your rocket fuel is. You might call it 'fuel quality.'"

Toward the end of their tests, McCall and the rest of his team built a reactor capable of rocket flight. "Called Nerva, it ran more than two hours, with 20 minutes of the time being at full power," he said. "At full power, it generated 75,000 pounds of thrust into a vacuum, and demonstrated a specific impulse of 850 seconds, more than any of our liquid or solid rockets yet flown.

?Thus, based on experimental evidence, nuclear rockets have a specific impulse, and a payload capability, twice that of a liquid or a solid.?

McCall mused on the past and the future of nuclear propulsion. "In a logical world, unfortunately not the one we live in, the choices of propulsion systems for deep-space travel, the moon and beyond, would be first nuclear by large margin," he said.

America has already accepted nuclear propulsion for ships and submarines. If the children and grandchildren of today?s space family are to navigate what John F. Kennedy called "this new ocean," to reach Mars and other deep-space ports, irrational fears must give way to logic ? just as they did when Columbus sailed, when the wagon trains left Saint Joe, and when Orville and Wilbur dared to fly.

If humankind is to survive, knowledge must always triumph over anxiety.

Business Development is Sales in Disguise | Colorado Women's ...

By: Liz Wendling, CWCC Member

Like it or not, we are all in sales!? This message is not only for people who are in traditional ?sales? this is for everyone who has anything to sell.?? Well, that pretty much means all of us, otherwise why are we in business?? Not embracing this hard fact, especially in this economy, can cost you your business. ?Common sense will tell you that without participating in business development and selling you will not have a business for too long.? Eighty percent of small business owners fail over a five year period, but worse, seventy percent fail in the first 12 months due to ?lack of money.?

We hear these statistics over and over again but the question is, ?why do we allow this dynamic to continue?? ?Most business owners are specialists in their field and never learn the art of selling like a true business professional.? For many, they do not want to learn to sell so they use these excuses ?I don?t want to be pushy,? ?I?m just not good at sales,? or ?I?m not a salesperson.? ?These are complete nonsense and using any of them will keep you exactly where you are right now.? Here is my new favorite quote: It doesn?t matter where you are; it matters where you?re going!

I regularly encounter entrepreneurs and even midsize companies that believe producing a quality product or service is enough and they refuse to believe they have to sell it.? Reality is, not changing your mindset about sales and selling will be fatal to your business. ?If you do not want to call it sales, call it business development.? Either way it means the same thing for your business; sale or no sale, thriving or surviving.

Smart sales people and enlightened business owners already recognize that their ?product? is only part of the sales process and that selling is actually just a ?value exchange?.?? They realize that even knowing the basics of sales conversation gives them a significant advantage over their competitors.

Some business owners are coming late to the game because they had no clue they needed to know how to sell.? Good news?.it?s not too late to create immediate change and grow your business.? If you want to survive in this rapidly changing marketplace, you need to learn how to sell and become more comfortable with the sales process, because all business (including yours) is sustained through the generation of revenue and is dependent upon sales transactions.

A true professional sales person or business owner who really wants his or her business to succeed will train, train and train to learn the art of selling well.

Stop whining, start winning and get over it; we are all selling something! ?Everyone needs support, everyone needs a guide and mentor and the smartest business people in the world all have coaches and mentors.? What have you got to lose? (I think you know the answer to that)

Liz Wendling, The Sales Coach for Women specializes in teaching women business owners, entrepreneurs and business leaders how to prosper by overcoming the fear and anxiety inherent in sales. Defense says Jackson killed himself with drugs

First, prosecutors showed a photo of Michael Jackson's pale and lifeless body lying on a gurney. Then, they played a recording of his voice, just weeks before his death.

Slow and slurred, his words echoed Tuesday through a Los Angeles courtroom at the start of the trial of the doctor accused of killing him. As a worldwide audience watched on TV and Jackson's family looked on from inside the courtroom, a drugged Jackson said:

"We have to be phenomenal. When people leave this show, when people leave my show, I want them to say, 'I've never seen nothing like this in my life. Go. Go. I've never seen nothing like this. Go. It's amazing. He's the greatest entertainer in the world.'"

Prosecutors played the audio for the first time during opening statements as they portrayed Dr. Conrad Murray, 58, as an incompetent physician who used a dangerous anesthetic without adequate safeguards and whose neglect left the superstar abandoned as he lay dying.

Defense attorneys countered that Jackson caused his own death by taking a drug dose, including propofol, after Murray left the room.

Nothing the cardiologist could have done would have saved the King of Pop, defense attorney Ed Chernoff told jurors, because Jackson was desperate to regain his fame and needed rest to prepare for a series of crucial comeback concerts.

A number of Jackson's family members were in the courthouse, including his father Joseph, mother Katherine, sisters LaToya and Janet, and brothers Jermaine, Randy and Tito. LaToya Jackson carried a sunflower, her brother's favorite flower.

The family's most emotional moment came when the prosecutor played a video excerpt from Jackson's "This Is It" rehearsal in which he sang "Earth Song," a plea for better treatment of the environment.

As Jackson sang the words, "I used to dream. I used to glance beyond the stars," his mother, Katherine, dabbed at her eyes with a tissue.

Story: Cheat sheet for Michael Jackson doctor's trial

Prosecutor David Walgren noted it was Jackson's last performance.

Murray, who arrived at court holding hands with his mother, has pleaded not guilty to involuntary manslaughter. If convicted, he could face up to four years in prison and the loss of his medical license.

Speaking for more than an hour, Walgren relied on photos and audio recordings to paint Murray as an inept and reckless caretaker.

Walgren showed a photo of a lifeless Jackson on a hospital gurney. He juxtaposed the image with those of Jackson performing. Walgren also played the recording of Jackson speaking to Murray while, the prosecutor said, the singer was under the influence of an unknown substance roughly six weeks before his death.

Jackson trusted Murray as his physician, and "that misplaced trust in Conrad Murray cost Michael Jackson his life," Walgren said.

The recurring theme was Jackson's never-ending quest for sleep and propofol, the potion he called his "milk" and that he believed was the answer. Jurors were told that it was a powerful anesthetic, not a sleep aid, and the prosecutor said Murray severely misused it.

The prosecutor said while working for Jackson, the doctor was shipped more than four gallons of the anesthetic, which is normally given in hospital settings.

Story: Michael Jackson saw salvation in dangerous drug

Chernoff, the defense attorney, claimed the singer swallowed several pills of the sedative lorazepam on the morning of his death and that was enough to put six people to sleep. After taking a self-administered dose of propofol, Jackson did not even have a chance to close his eyes, Chernoff said, claiming he died instantly.

Chernoff, who had long hinted that the defense would blame Jackson for his own death, added a surprise. He claimed that Jackson died not because his doctor continued to give him the drug but because he stopped it, forcing Jackson to take extreme measures.

"What we will hear is that Dr. Murray provided propofol for two months to Michael Jackson for sleep," Chernoff said. "During those two months, Michael Jackson slept. He woke up and he lived his life.

"The evidence will not show you that Michael Jackson died because Dr. Murray gave him propofol. The evidence is going to show you Michael Jackson died when Dr. Murray stopped," the attorney said.

He said Murray was trying to wean Jackson off of propofol and had been giving him other sleep aids known as benzodiazepines trying to lull him to sleep.

On June 25, 2009, the last day of Jackson's life, Chernoff said, he was in the third day of a weaning process and it didn't work.

"Michael Jackson started begging. He couldn't understand why he wasn't sleeping.... When Michael Jackson told Dr. Murray 'I have to sleep. They will cancel my performance,' he meant it," Chernoff said.

Murray, in a recording of his interview with police detectives, acknowledged that he relented and agreed to give Jackson a small dose of propofol.

Walgren said Murray's claim that he gave the singer a minuscule dosage, enough to keep him asleep perhaps five minutes, was not true. He also accused Murray of deception when he hid from paramedics and hospital emergency staff that he had given Jackson propofol. He said they were desperately trying to revive him but didn't know about the drug.

He returned repeatedly to the fee Murray was to be paid ? $150,000 a month ? and pointed out that he first had asked for $5 million.

"There was no doctor-patient relationship," Walgren said. "... What existed here was an employer-employee relationship. He was not working for the health of Michael Jackson. Dr. Murray was working for a fee of $150,000."

Chernoff countered with a description of Murray's history of treating indigent patients for free. At times during the defense attorney's opening statements, Murray appeared to be crying and wiped his eyes with a tissue.

Jackson's family members appeared pained as Walgren described the singer as a vulnerable figure, left alone with drugs coursing through his body.

"It violates not only the standard of care but the decency of one human being to another," he said. "Dr. Murray abandoned Michael when he needed help."

Video: Reporter: Jackson?s ghost will haunt trial (on this page)

Following opening statements, Jackson's choreographer and friend, Kenny Ortega, testified that Jackson was in bad shape physically and mentally less than a week before his death.

He said he sent a message to Randy Phillips, producer of the "This Is It" concert, telling him that Jackson was ill, probably should have a psychological evaluation and was not ready to perform.

"It's important for everyone to know he really wants this," he wrote. "It would shatter him, break his heart if we pulled the plug. He's terribly frightened it's all going to go away."

In response to the email, Ortega said, a meeting was called at Jackson's house where Ortega clashed with Murray, who told him to stop playing amateur psychiatrist and doctor.

"He said Michael was physically and emotionally capable of handling all his responsibilities for the show,'" said Ortega, "I was shocked. Michael didn't seem to be physically or emotionally stable."

Within a few days, he said, Jackson had recouped his energy and was full of enthusiasm for the show.

During the defense opening statement, Chernoff referred to Dr. Arnold Klein, Jackson's dermatologist, who the judge decided will not testify.

The attorney tried to blame Klein for some of Jackson's woes, saying Klein gave Jackson the painkiller Demerol and he became addicted to it.

Slideshow: Michael Jackson?s life and career (on this page)

He told jurors that Klein would not be testifying but his records would be available and an addiction specialist would testify that one of the side effects of Demerol withdrawal is trouble sleeping. Chernoff said Murray was unaware of a Demerol shot administered to Jackson on June 16 and thus didn't realize there could be a fatal interaction with propofol.

Klein's attorney, Garo Ghazarian, later in the day issued a statement calling the allegations preposterous and "merely an attempt to whitewash the facts surrounding the death of ... Michael Jackson while under the management of Dr. Conrad Murray."

He noted there were no traces of Demerol in Jackson's autopsy or in his home, indicating he was not addicted. He also said Klein's use of the drug was not excessive. He noted that Klein was cleared by authorities of any wrongdoing in Jackson's death.

Dr. Conrad Murray could lose his medical license and get four years in prison if found guilty. Do you think that's fair? Discuss on Facebook. You can also follow our updates from the trial on Twitter @TODAY_ent.

Sweaty shirts slow players

Lionel Messi

updated 11:15 a.m. ET Sept. 27, 2011

BARCELONA, Spain - Few opponents have been able to slow Barcelona. But Nike may have inadvertently managed to do just that ? with shirts that absorb too much sweat.

The Spanish soccer champions say they have recently met with Nike officials to complain about the new shirts. The team contends the shirts absorb so much moisture they take on added weight over the course of a game.

The Spanish newspaper El Pais first reported claims from Barcelona players that the shirts more than doubled in weight by halftime.

Nike said in a statement to The Associated Press on Tuesday that it is "working to find a solution to the problem with the shirts along with the club."

Newly identified DNA repair defect linked to increased risk of leukemia relapse

Monday, September 26, 2011

A newly identified defect in a DNA repair system might leave some young leukemia patients less likely to benefit from a key chemotherapy drug, possibly putting them at greater risk of relapse. The problem was identified in a study led by St. Jude Children's Research Hospital scientists.

The study's findings offer a potential new marker to help identify acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) patients who are at higher risk of having their cancer return and thus are candidates for more tailored therapies. The research was published in the September 25 online edition of the scientific journal Nature Medicine.

The work focused on a protein named MSH2, which is involved in DNA repair. DNA is the molecule that carries instructions for building and sustaining life. Cell division requires DNA synthesis. The DNA repair system helps correct errors in DNA production. The DNA repair proteins are also involved in how some chemotherapy agents kill leukemia cells.

In this study, investigators discovered a new mechanism responsible for low MSH2 levels in about 11 percent of pediatric ALL and in several adult cancers. Researchers also found low MSH2 levels were associated with leukemia resistance to the thiopurine medications, including mercaptopurine, a drug all children with ALL receive.

"If confirmed, this work suggests a patient's MSH2 status might someday be used to guide treatment," said Barthelemy Diouf, Ph.D., the first author. He is a postdoctoral fellow in the laboratory of William Evans, Pharm.D., the paper's senior author. Evans is chief executive officer and director of St. Jude.

In the U.S., ALL is diagnosed in about 3,000 children annually, making it the nation's most common childhood cancer. It is also one of modern medicine's success stories. At St. Jude, 90 percent of young ALL patients are now cured. This study reflects ongoing efforts to understand why treatment sometimes fails.

The research built on earlier work from the laboratory of Evans and others that linked a deficit of MSH2 with an increased risk of certain cancers and resistance to mercaptopurine, a drug that is the backbone of leukemia treatment.

In this study, scientists found that 11 percent of 90 newly diagnosed pediatric ALL patients had low or undetectable levels of the MSH2 protein.

Ten years after an ALL diagnosis, children with low MSH2 protein levels were less likely to be alive and four times more likely to have suffered relapses. The comparison included 97 patients treated in a St. Jude study called Total XV, which ended in 2007. Sixteen patients had leukemia with low MSH2 levels. The analysis took other factors into account, including a patient's age and early treatment response, which are associated with high-risk ALL. The results suggest MSH2 protein levels might help identify a new group of high-risk patients.

Further work revealed no evidence of problems in the MSH2 gene itself, so scientists expanded their search for why some patients had low MSH2 levels in their leukemia cells. Researchers looked for changes in the makeup of eight genes known or suspected of playing a role in the breakdown of MSH2. To do that, they screened DNA from 69 of the 90 newly diagnosed ALL patients at nearly 1 million spots in the genome.

The research showed each patient was missing at least one of the four genes that regulate MSH2 degradation. "MSH2 was still made, but the system to protect it from destruction had been impaired or eliminated, leading to more rapid breakdown of MSH2 and a crippled system for fixing DNA," Evans said. The missing genes were FRAP1, HERC1, PRKCZ and PIK3C2B.

A check of leukemia cells from another group of St. Jude ALL patients found that about 12 percent, or 21 of the 170 children, were missing at least one of the same genes. A search of public databases found one or more of the same genes deleted in 13.5 percent of sporadic colorectal cancer patients and 16 percent of adults with ALL.

Evans noted that low MSH2 levels did not increase resistance to other drugs used to treat ALL. "In the future, we may want to intensify use of other therapies," he said.

Over 100 Army Special Forces troops dispatched for Sikkim

To carry out relief operations in areas rendered inaccessible due to the powerful earthquake that struck the Himalayan region last week, the Indian Army has deployed over 100 troops of its Special Forces in Sikkim.

Indian Army's Para-Special Forces deployed in nearby locations were brought here and then flown to totally cut off regions in North Sikkim by Mi-17 choppers, Indian Air Force (IAF) officials said.

Over four sorties with 22 SF troops each were flown to Chungthang and from there they were sent to forward locations.

The SF troops are carrying with them special equipment including ropes and other climbing gear which can be used to reach inaccessible places in mountains and help in rescuing stranded civilians and military personnel.

The troops are also carrying stretchers to evacuate stranded people.

The SF men have been divided in various small teams to conduct rescue operations in targeted areas and are also assisting in clearing important roads in the quake-hit areas of Sikkim.

The SF troops have been positioned in areas where the 112 brigade of the Indian Army is deployed. This Brigade which looks after the Indian border with China has been cut off from roads since the earthquake struck the region on September 18.

The army SF troops have been trained to carry out special operations in both conventional and non-conventional warfare.

Thousands at pope's final Mass in Germany (AP)

FREIBURG, Germany ? Thousands of faithful, cheering and waving flags, have turned out for the final Mass of Pope Benedict XVI's visit to his native Germany.

Applause erupted as Benedict arrived Sunday morning at a vast field beside an airport in Freiburg.

The pope's four-day state visit comes as Germany's church has been losing tens of thousands of followers amid revelations that hundreds of children and young people were abused by clergy and church employees. There have also been scattered protests denouncing the Vatican views on homosexuality, contraception and other issues.

Benedict alluded to the dissent in Catholic ranks Saturday night when he said that through the years "damage to the church comes not from opponents, but from uncommitted Christians."

Left vs. W.H. over mortgage deal (Politico)

President Barack Obama?s liberal base says he?s on the verge of selling out to the banks again.

This time, the problem is a subprime mortgage settlement that his administration is pressuring state attorneys general to sign off on ? a deal that could stop many state investigations and prosecutions about mortgage lending practices.

That settlement, a collaboration between the Justice Department and the 50 state attorneys general much like the one that produced the landmark 1998 agreement with tobacco companies, would mean a lump-sum payment from the banks in exchange for a release from liability. But with negotiators in Washington this week trying to finalize a deal, it?s become the latest flashpoint of left-wing disenchantment with Obama.

?The least charitable view ties it directly to campaign donations,? said Adam Green, co-founder of the Progressive Change Campaign Committee, which this week began mobilizing its 700,000 supporters against the broader deal. ?The most charitable view, it?s a bunch of Wall Street hacks in the position of economic advisers who truly believe that giving billions to banks will trickle down to the middle class. The most charitable view is that they?re just wrong.?

For Obama, a settlement would be a chance ahead of next year?s election to claim progress on a key kitchen-table issue that?s particularly pronounced in several swing states ? and tout it as an example of rare bipartisan success to boot.

For liberals, the fight over this issue ? how much responsibility lenders have for the mortgage crisis ? is an opportunity to put the banks on trial, forcing greater consumer protections and bigger payouts along the way. Between the bailouts and financial regulations, they say Obama?s already caved to the banks too much.

?There are a lot of progressives, and frankly everyday voters, who wish this White House would cut their ties with Wall Street, stop the sucking up to Wall Street,? Green said.

And the fear that the White House is pushing for an agreement that doesn?t go far enough is fitting into the larger frustration with Obama for how he?s handled negotiations over everything from health care to the debt ceiling.

?Yes, we have to get something done, but we?re not going to accept the false choice that requires us to take a settlement that doesn?t meet the scale of the problem ? and it?s another example of the White House not knowing how to bargain effectively,? said one labor official, who asked not to be named because of ongoing involvement with the discussions.

For the last year, the 50 attorneys general and federal government have been negotiating a settlement with Bank of America, Citigroup, JPMorgan Chase, Ally Financial and Wells Fargo. While the terms of the settlement aren?t finalized, a draft release submitted by the coalition to the banks ? details of which were obtained by POLITICO ? shows an agreement that addresses more than the original target of ?robo-signing,? the practice of lenders signing mortgage documents without sufficient review of borrowers? credit or ability to pay back the loans.

?I've been working in the online gaming branding field for years now ...

Starting out was a online gaming branding webmaster can be very challenging. The first, and most important part, is getting a good domain name. ?Domains can easily be turned into good online gaming branding brands,? reports Sivret Weader, who has several websites, ?and the shorter, the better, so that people can remember to return to your site.? After a domain has been anchored, find a programmer who is well versed in the online gaming branding sector, since this will help you communicate easier and work more efficiently. ?Like any entrepreneurial venture, the online gaming branding sector comes with substantial risk,? warns Mohamad Needleman, author of the ?Internet?s guide to marketing?, ?so if your bank roll can?t afford the initial investment, or if you just don?t have enough time, wait until things are clearer before setting out to work on new online gaming branding projects.? All in all, don?t forget to enjoy your work. If you don?t like the online gaming branding business, don?t make yourself get up every day to slog away at your desk. Instead, find what you really enjoy and stick with it. For some people, creating a online gaming branding oriented website can be easy, for others, it can be a real challenge; but, if you don?t like working on these projects, you?re better off searching for more meaningful self employment. ?I followed the great online gaming branding Webmasters? Guide by Helen Morain, who details some simple website plans that one can build from readily available templates,? said Schadler Siron. Templates can be used on most platforms, including Windows and Linux based servers. It?s important to remember that the server operating system doesn?t matter when it comes to making a buck in the online gaming branding sector: marketing your website successfully is the only way to go. Working online with other online gaming branding businesses can be difficult due to the nature of the internet. At the core of every webmaster?s knowledge base is secrecy and magic tricks. The internet is known as the ?information super highway?, so if you have online gaming branding information that your competitor doesn?t, you?re going to come out on top and make the big bucks. ?When I started making money in my venture online,? recalls Acklin Serna, ?I ran to the nearest marketing forums and began spilling the beans about how my websites achieved top positions in the search engines. Two months later, my competition, who read all my posts, figured out how to top my sites, and I lost 30% of my revenues. Fool me once, shame on me!? Another thing to remember, especially when working with online gaming branding ideas, is content copyrights and content syndication. ?You don?t want to inadvertently steal someone else?s hard work,? suggests Queenie Cazier, ?but at the same time, you have to cite your sources so that your claims to online gaming branding knowledge are based on fact?. RSS feeds, which stands for ?Really Simple Syndication? can be used to put the word out about your online gaming branding website. Then, after your articles are around the net, you can beging to build your own library of reference pieces. ?There?s no short cut to success,? laments Ericson Artiaga, a online gaming branding industry veteran, ?When my website got going, I soon received many offers from foreign companies with stolen email lists and sleazy marketing methods. They promise quick riches the easy way, but in fact, there is no easy way to making bank in the online gaming branding field - it comes down to creativity and hard work.? As with any venture, it is important to seek legal counsel, especially if you plan to market online gaming branding to consumers nationwide. Laws vary from state to state, and coordinating sales tax on any online gaming branding merchandise and making sure all money processing is fairly calculated can be a headache. ?Many corporate legal firms, like Serafine Crick INC, offer turn-key solutions for webmasters that sell nationwide,? reports Gaerlan Razey, a big time webmaster, ?and this can eliminate a lot of stress right away. Many firms plug you right into their online gaming branding payment processing division, and you?re up and running legally within a couple short weeks.?

Officials Won't Reopen Rebecca Zahau Investigation

California's Attorney General says officials will not reopen the investigation into the death Rebecca Zahau, despite calls from Jonah Shacknai to do so.

Rebecca's nude body was found hanging from a balcony at Jonah's Coronado, Calif., mansion, days after his son, Max, was found unconscious there.

Rebecca's death was ruled a suicide, which her family vehemently disagrees with. Max later died from injuries he sustained from an accidental fall.

Rebecca Zahau Picture

Despite the mysteriousness of Zahau's suicide message and the way her body was found, among other factors, officials consider the matter closed.

In a letter from Kamala Harris' office to Jonah Shacknai, the A.G. writes:

"Your letter requests an inquiry into the investigation that was conducted by the San Diego Sheriff's Office ... The California Department of Justice would review a local investigation under very narrow circumstances."

"Some of the factors that are considered before committing the state's scarce resources include whether a clear conflict of interest exists, whether local law enforcement agency has requested assistance, whether local investigative resources have been exhausted, and whether there are allegations of gross malfeasance by the investigative agency."

"Based on a review of your request, we must decline your invitation to review this investigation at this time."

7parkave - The New Shape of Business Financing and Commercial ...

Turmoil in economic times presents all sorts of challenges for Canadian business owners and financial managers. As challenging as business financing has become so called ' tougher times' a new group of financing services and players in Canadian business financing offer new and different types of financing for business needs.

Most people would agree that the Canadian chartered banks had what we could call the protective turf in Canadian business financing for many decades. Our observation? Boy has that changed, and new dynamic and innovative offerings are available for every type of business, from start up to large corporation.

A good way to thing of business financing in Canada is simply by thinking of the offering as either from a regulated player, or a non regulated player. Banks are a good example of regulated players, while firms such as equipment finance companies or asset based lenders tend to be unregulated.

Types of financing that might have been unimaginable in older times are now viewed as new and extraordinary relative to business financing needs.

Many larger industrial corporations - i.e. G.E, G.M., etc. have in fact become major players in Global and certainly Canadian financing. Commercial lending and financing is no longer of course just offered by Canadian chartered banks. In Canada it is some major insurance companies and pension funds that are the ones funding the Canadian equipment financing industry.

Different financing firms have different niches, but in many cases competition has become fierce and it?s quite often a challenge for the companies seeking Canadian business financing to differentiate from who is offering what.

When we think of the financing needs of larger companies in Canada we can be forgiven for thinking that this is the real bread and butter of bank commercial lending in Canada.

Captive finance companies also provide a significant amount of financing in Canada. They play a significant role in many transactions that otherwise might not be able to meet more stringent bank criteria. Canadian banks , viewed as the strongest and best run in pretty well the whole world haven?t necessarily stood around watching their business financing and commercial lending decline . They have expanded into the U.S., purchased independent commercial lease financing and auto financing firms, and rebranded these firms into their own offering.

Many smaller companies in Canada, those ranging under 5 Million dollars in revenue utilize independent commercial receivable financing firms, known as ' factors' to finance their working capital needs. The need for this and other types of creative financing is huge because of the general strict credit criteria of the Canadian chartered banking system.

Other non bank financing services in Canada generate premium pricing for the companies offering these services. We think they do this by paying more attention to the real needs of Canadian firms seeking commercial lending. When asset based lenders or receivable and P.O. factoring firms have the right discipline they have proved themselves to be very successful and strong competitors of the Canadian banks.

Canadian non bank finance firms have a number of nonproprietary finance offerings that allow premium pricing, and servicing the SME (small to medium enterprise) sector provides strong growth opportunities.
