Pitt and MIT researchers accomplish first demonstration of oscillating gels that can be 'revived' by mechanical pressure
PITTSBURGHSooner than later, robots may have the ability to "feel." In a paper published online March 26 in Advanced Functional Materials, a team of researchers from the University of Pittsburgh and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) demonstrated that a nonoscillating gel can be resuscitated in a fashion similar to a medical cardiopulmonary resuscitation. These findings pave the way for the development of a wide range of new applications that sense mechanical stimuli and respond chemicallya natural phenomenon few materials have been able to mimic.
A team of researchers at Pitt made predictions regarding the behavior of Belousov-Zhabotinsky (BZ) gel, a material that was first fabricated in the late 1990s and shown to pulsate in the absence of any external stimuli. In fact, under certain conditions, the gel sitting in a petri dish resembles a beating heart.
Along with her colleagues, Anna Balazs, Distinguished Professor of Chemical and Petroleum Engineering in Pitt's Swanson School of Engineering, predicted that BZ gel not previously oscillating could be re-excited by mechanical pressure. The prediction was actualized by MIT researchers, who proved that chemical oscillations can be triggered by mechanically compressing the BZ gel beyond a critical stress. A video from the MIT group showing this unique behavior can be accessed at http://vvgroup.scripts.mit.edu/WP/?p=1078
"Think of it like human skin, which can provide signals to the brain that something on the body is deformed or hurt," says Balazs. "This gel has numerous far-reaching applications, such as artificial skin that could be sensorya holy grail in robotics."
Balazs says the gel could serve as a small-scale pressure sensor for different vehicles or instruments to see whether they'd been bumped, providing diagnostics for the impact on surfaces. This sort of developmentand materials like BZ gelare things Balazs has been interested in since childhood.
"My mother would often tease me when I was young, saying I was like a mimosa plant shy and bashful," says Balazs. "As a result, I became fascinated with the plant and its unique hide-and-seek qualitiesthe plant leaves fold inward and droop when touched or shaken, reopening just minutes later. I knew there had to be a scientific application regarding touch, which led me to studies like this in mechanical and chemical energy."
Also on Balazs's research team were Olga Kuksenok, research associate professor, and Victor Yashin, visiting research assistant professor, both in Pitt's Swanson School of Engineering. At MIT, the work was performed by Krystyn Van Vliet, Paul M. Cook Career Development Associate Professor of Material Sciences and Engineering, and graduate student Irene Chen. BAGHDAD (AP) ? Sunni Muslim rulers largely shunned an Arab League summit hosted by Shiite-led Iraq on Thursday, illustrating how powerfully the sectarian split and the rivalry with Iran define Middle Eastern politics in the era of the Arab Spring.
The crisis in Syria is the epicenter of those divisions. The one-day summit closed with a joint call on Syrian President Bashar Assad to stop his bloody crackdown on an uprising seeking his ouster. But the final statement barely papered over the differences among the Arab nations over how to deal with the longest-running regional revolt.
"What disturbs the breeze of our Arab Spring and fills our hearts with sadness is the scenes of slaughter and torture committed by the Syrian regime against our brothers and sisters in Syria," said Mustafa Abdul-Jalil, leader of Libya's National Transitional Council.
In a snub to Iraq, only 10 heads of state from the Arab League's 22 members attended, with the rest sending lower-level officials. Especially notable were the absences of the rulers of Saudi Arabia, Qatar and most other Gulf countries, as well Morocco and Jordan ? all of them headed by Sunni monarchs who deeply distrust the close ties between Baghdad's Shiite-dominated government and their top regional rival, Iran.
The Gulf countries also see Iraq as too soft on Syria. Saudi Arabia and Qatar have talked of arming Syria's opposition, apparently eager to bring the fall of Assad and break the Sunni-majority country out of its alliance with Iran.
Speaking to the gathering, Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki urged restraint, saying Baghdad opposes any military intervention and citing his country's years of turmoil as an example of what happens when outside forces get involved in national struggles. U.S. forces left Iraq just over 100 days ago after nearly nine years of war and occupation.
"Iraq is afraid of the attempts to militarize the Arab uprisings, because this will deviate them from the right course and push toward the wrong position," al-Maliki said. "Dialogue between the government and the opposition is the right option to solve the crisis."
Iraq's hosting of the annual summit for the first time since 1990 was touted by Baghdad officials as a victory in their efforts to show the country is moving toward stability after years of sectarian fighting that almost tipped the nation into civil war. Thousands of security forces cleared the streets and locked down the capital in one of the quietest weeks in years, although officials said two Katyusha rockets hit near the fortified Green Zone where the summit was held just as diplomats convened. No casualties were reported.
The summit was the first since the wave of Arab Spring uprisings began sweeping the region more than a year ago, targeting its long-ruling strongmen. The 2011 summit was canceled because of the turmoil. There were two new faces at Thursday's collection of heads of state: Libya's Abdul-Jalil, who holds nominal power after the ouster and killing of Moammar Gadhafi, and Tunisia President Moncef Marzouki, a former human rights activist who was elevated after the fall of Zine El Abidine Ben Ali.
The new leaders of Egypt and Yemen ? the other two countries whose rulers fell last year ? did not attend, a reflection of their continuing domestic troubles.
The session was dominated by the uprising in Syria, where the U.N. says more than 9,000 people have been killed in the regime's yearlong crackdown on its political opponents. The regime has sent tanks and troops into Syrian cities and towns, saying the country was under attack from the armed groups.
The conflict has a dangerous sectarian angle ? most in the opposition come from the Sunni majority, while Assad's regime relies on the minority Alawites, an offshoot from Shiism.
Assad has accepted a peace plan put forward by U.N.-Arab League envoy Kofi Annan, which calls for a cease-fire. But the Syrian opposition and many Arab governments are skeptical Assad will implement it, believing he is just playing for time. Assad said Thursday that armed rebels must also commit to a cease-fire.
The summit's final resolution called on Assad's regime to "immediately implement" Annan's proposals. It also said Arab leaders fully support the "legitimate aspirations of the Syrian people to democracy and freedom and their right to determine their future."
U.S. State Department spokesman Mark Toner congratulated Iraq on the summit.
"From what we've seen, (it was) a success. They did talk about Syria and voiced their very strong support for Kofi Annan's efforts," he said. "All indications are that it ... has gone well and that Iraq should be proud of what it's been able to accomplish in recent years. And we believe the hosting of this summit is indicative of its positive role in the region and among the community of nations."
Gulf nations, which have made clear they have little faith in the diplomatic efforts, are already looking at the possibility of moving ahead on their own over Syria. They meet this weekend in Saudi Arabia, and U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton is planning to attend those talks in Riyadh, which may yield stronger calls for action than those made by the Arab League.
"The Syrian government is required today to listen to the voice of reason and wisdom and stop all kinds of violence," said the emir of Kuwait, Sheik Sabah, the only ruler from the Gulf to attend. He signaled support for an earlier League plan that called on Assad to cede power to his vice president until elections are held. The League had to back down from that after an attempt to win U.N. backing for it was vetoed by Russia and China.
That plan, he said, is the best way "to get out of this crisis and to stop the bloodshed of our brothers and to keep the Syrian country from slipping into a civil war."
The cold shoulder from other Sunni-led monarchies, however, underlined their suspicion about Iraq's Shiite leadership and their conviction that it is too close to the camp of their rival, Iran.
"To be obvious here, these countries have a problem with Iran," said Kuwait delegation member Khalid Al Anteri.
In unusually direct remarks, Qatar's prime minister said a midlevel official was sent to the summit instead of the emir as a "message" protesting what he called Baghdad's sidelining of Iraq's Sunni minority.
"We do not agree with all what goes on in terms of the political process inside Iraq; we believe a particular sect is targeted," Sheik Hamad bin Jassem bin Jabr Al Thani told Al-Jazeera on Wednesday.
The Kuwaiti emir's presence reflected the progress in Baghdad's efforts to rebuild long tense ties with its neighbor since Saddam Hussein's 1990 invasion and seven-month occupation of Kuwait. But despite Baghdad's recent charm offensive to settle legal claims across the region and its dazzling display at the summit where delegates were fed gold-covered dates, Gulf states have little to gain from fully welcoming Iraq into their ranks.
Its lucrative oil supply makes it a strong competitor in the Gulf, and its ongoing insurgency and political instability makes Iraq a risky teammate.
"It's no surprise that the Gulf states did not want to give Iraq the prestige that they would by sending heads of state to the summit," said Crispin B. Hawes, Middle East director of the Eurasia Group, a New York-based risk consultant agency.
"They want Iraq to continue to be a second-rate citizen in the region; they want to keep Iraq inside the box," he said. "They don't want it to be another major regional player."

Self-Esteem Is Not Just A Personal Matter | Self Improvement Blogs ...
Shallowness is the relationship that you?ve got with yourself, your sense of personal worth. Vanity might subsequently seem like a completely personal issue. However, your self-esteem affects not only your own life, nevertheless it impacts the lives of everybody round you.
Your stage of shallowness affects how you treat others that you interact with or keep away from interaction with. You have got most likely been the sufferer of somebody with low self-esteem yourself. Perhaps a colleague who was making an attempt to impose his or her method on others, a instructor who did his or her best to make your life miserable, or maybe just a grumpy neighbour. The perfect (and worst) example of the detrimental impacts of other people?s low self-esteem is probably when a father or mother with low vanity behaves in a non-loving manner towards his or her children who in turn will grow up with a low shallowness and do the same to other people. Each word that you say to others, every gesture and each action is influenced by your self-esteem. When you?ve got a low shallowness you will usually have a more negative effect on different people.
Your level of vanity is thus obviously not only a personal matter. Compare in your mind a country where all of the political leaders have excessive vanity with a country wherein all the leaders have low self-esteem. If I lived within the nation with low shallowness custom jerseys I?d exhibit for sending all of them on a shallowness course!
Your vanity has larger impression over other people?s lives than your skills in arithmetic, physics, music, history or some other college subject. But self-esteem just isn?t formally taught in schools. Once I was a baby, we had a textbook referred to as ?I?m ok?. Now as an adult I can guess that this ebook was supposed to teach us vanity, however all the students (including me) hated those courses because they had been so boring. The lecturers did not know easy methods to teach self-esteem to younger children. They probably didn?t even perceive why they had been supposed to teach it. Fortunately or unfortunately, these lessons have been very few.
Teachers needs to be skilled in find out how to assist their college students to gain larger self-esteem. There also needs to be vanity trainers in all large firms in order that their employes can continue to develop their self-esteem. This might be an enormous funding to each the colleges and the businesses due to the benefits that higher vanity among the students and employes would bring.
Leaving people to figure out find out how to increase their vanity by themselves is simply too risky. The entire world would benefit if extra individuals learnt how you can develop a excessive self-esteem.

Getting more talkative?
Some more good news for Android fans, particularly for those using Google Voice, as the app gets upgraded to the latest version of Google's operating system for mobile devices.

The users will also have the possibility to slow down or speed up the message playback, which is particularly convenient for long messages. And this is not all, as the users can now fast-forward through a long voicemail to skip the boring or too predictable parts and jump exactly to the piece of information that interests them. ?
To make the app even more practical, the users also have access to text transcripts. The app has a revamped user interface designed to deliver an enhanced experience. The users will first notice the new menu bar located at the bottom of the screen.
Google Voice with the new features is available for download from Google Play. Following the download, the users just need to click on "Voicemail display" which is located under the settings tab.

Another essential category of classes, phlebotomists will understand about blood and cell composition. Understanding how blood and cells are affected by infection and disease is a idea in phlebotomy. Phlebotomists will also discover blood sampling procedures. Most typically utilized is venipuncture, but phlebotomists will find out other techniques which can be utilised in newborns, young children, some adults, and the elderly. Laboratory safety is very important for keeping phlebotomists and their patients safe. Operating in the medical field, phlebotomists need to recognize that several patients could have pre-existing well being conditions. Many phlebotomy programs offer you CPR and first help certification. Topics covered by other courses phlebotomists could take include professional behavior, good quality control, legal troubles, and personal computer coaching. Good record keeping and labeling is an crucial ability of phlebotomists. Poor labeling might result in mixed up specimens and test results.
You can find only two states where a phlebotomy certification is mandatory but most employers now ask for certification as a requirement for employment. At present, there are ten nationally recognized professional groups who can issue a phlebotomy certification. These incorporate the American Certification Agency, National Center for Competency Testing, National Phlebotomy Association, the American Society of Clinical Pathology along with the American Medical Technologists among others. As you can plainly see, what you will find out about phlebotomy training schools is some points are far more important than others. However, the bottom line is how you want to use it, and how much of it will impact your situation. Of course there is rather a lot more to be learned. The balance of this read holds much more that will help your particular situation. Even following what is next, we will not quit there because the best is yet to come.
The Phlebotomy training programs given by the majority of schools have distinct time spans that depend on the qualification that they give. For example, the certification degree plan lasts only few months. Whereas the bachelor degree system can final even four years, with no counting the internship period which is mandatory regardless of the system you chose.
Associate and bachelor?s degrees are available in clinical and laboratory technologies, which educate students about far more aspects of technical positions than simply phlebotomy. Much more frequent are phlebotomy certificate programs. Degrees take two to 4 years to total, whereas certificate programs can take as little as 12 weeks. Degrees expense five to ten occasions the amount of certificate programs for which the average tuition ranges from $1500 to $3000. Phlebotomists with a higher level of education could have an benefit when locating employment, but certified phlebotomists are still in high demand.
In case you do not belong for the unemployed category then you should check with your neighborhood nursing homes and old age properties as most from the time they sponsor several students for skilled instruction programs. Most with the time they are going to need that you just function for them right after completing the certification or for the duration of the instruction itself. This has the benefit of escalating the chances of finding a job following completing the certification successfully. Even so, such free phlebotomy training reduces your employment alternatives considerably. Finally you must appear for free phlebotomy instruction at on the web coaching programs. The on the web programs give you the flexibility of timing and pace of understanding. Nonetheless they su from an inability to supply hands on practical coaching.
Starting a brand new profession could be a really thrilling time in your life as many possibilities are coming to the table for you personally and your family. As a phlebotomy technician you might have the ability to earn a superb wage and understand a ability or two that could help you in many techniques the rest of one?s life.
You have a selection to study at the university, at the college or in the vocational school to obtain a certification of phlebotomy. The differences lie in that the colleges, fundamentally, give more diversified study system, which lasts much longer than phlebotomy courses provided by vocational or technical schools. Phlebotomy courses could take you for about a single semester to far more than a single year according to the selected system. So it is up to you to opt a appropriate variant of educational plan, which will meet your wants. In case you might be incredibly busy and have a strict time-table, you are going to be advised to attend one-semester course at the technical or vocational schools. This may save your time and funds.
The enrollment in the school programs of phlebotomy coaching needs a high-school diploma or GED. Phlebotomy jobs demand a degree from an accredited phlebotomy school, university or vocational school. The on the internet programs supply fundamental courses for the necessary instruction. On the internet degree programs in phlebotomy could be completed in less than three months; associate degree in phlebotomy could take 18 months. And bachelor degrees in Universities and Colleges in Phlebotomy demand longer periods of study. On-line school programs in phlebotomy normally consist of anatomy, physiology, phlebotomy methods and communication skills that concentrate on how to relax patients and get their blood in a relaxing way. Practical coaching will likely be the extraction of blood by means of the skin (venipuncture), and if it really is needed, an encounter inside a laboratory or clinic will be a nice addition.
A phlebotomist is somebody who has the proper education and instruction inside the tactics and steps in drawing blood, which includes laboratory procedures and tests. The job needs a high degree of responsibility since majority of the errors committed on laboratory research occur in the specimen collection or pre evaluation stage. Hospitals, laboratories, blood banks and other blood collection clinics hardly ever employ a phlebotomist without having the correct certification.

Golf: Price is right in Morocco
Phillip Price holds a one-shot lead at the Trophee Hassan II after the second round was suspended on Friday with all three Australians yet to complete their rounds.
Price, though, carded a flawless six-under 66 to move into 10-under at Golf du Palais Royal in Agadir, Morocco, where the start of play was delayed by almost six hours because of strong winds.
Price is a shot clear of Spaniard Jose Manuel Lara, who shot a seven-under 65, while Swede Joel Sjoholm shares third with South African James Kingston.
Kingston was through 17 holes when play was suspended, one of several players unable to finish their second rounds because of the earlier delay.
Price, famous for beating Phil Mickelson in the singles to help Europe win the 2002 Ryder Cup, said he was thrilled with his round after the lengthy delay.
"It was rather unpleasant this morning so I'm very pleased," Price said.
"I had a 5:25 alarm call this morning and then a five-and-a-half-hour delay. Thankfully I managed to have a little 20-minute power nap in the locker room during the delay and that really helped. "
"I was very surprised by how calm it became throughout the day after this morning. It was really windy when we started to go out there and shoot six-under is really pleasing. "
"But it was frustrating to go to the tee twice and not be allowed to tee off because it is difficult to get yourself in the right mood and then be called off."
Starting on the back nine, Price went bogey-free with a hat-trick of birdies from the 15th helping kick-start his round.
Overnight leader Damien McGrane is tied for fifth at seven-under after managing par through five holes.
Brett Rumford, meanwhile, remains the best of the Australians at one-under for the tournament. Rumford is nine strokes behind the leader but didn't even get the chance to start his second round on Friday.
Rumford is alongside Andrew Dodt, who is on par through four holes in his second round, and two strokes ahead of Marcus Fraser, who is one over through three.

It will be ultimately determined at a set amount after the underwriters complete your information, however your agent ought to be able to provide you an idea in any case. After that you?ll realize whether or not the plan which you are considering will work for you. The premium depends on a number of aspects that you can amend also.
Therefore, your monthly premium will establish your deductible. These are essential details to discuss with your agent. It can be complicated, so don?t be fearful of asking a lot of questions. A deductible is the amount you must pay for medical care until you get to the arranged amount, then the insurance kicks in. At that point, you?ll be accountable for your coinsurance payments. That?s a part of the sum that it costs when you visit the hospital or doctor.
Make certain to ask your agent about coverage limits on various plans and about the established prescription drugs list. If you take a drug on a regular basis, you?ll want to be sure that it?s covered. Also, a lot of companies only cover specific drugs. Any others you would need to pay for yourself. The confines on what they?ll pay for is typically by the year, and for the extent of holding the coverage. You?ll want to know all of these factors precisely before you sign up for any of them.
The final detail you must find out about is the accessibility of doctors. You should get to select whatever doctor you wish from a list , or a provider network.
Make sure that there is somebody well-located for you on the list. If you previously know of a physician you like, you can look to see if they?re one of the doctors on the list. If not, you can ask the physician what plan they use so you might get that plan. Seeing a specialist can oftentimes necessitate a referral. If this is a concern, you?ll want to ask about that also.

Biggie's 'Everyday Struggle' A Highlight For Lil' Cease
'I was too young to understand everything in it, but I understood everything in it,' Cease tells MTV News of 1994 track.
By Rob Markman, with reporting by Sway Calloway

The Notorious B.I.G. had plenty of hit singles, like "Big Poppa" and "Hypnotize," but more often than not, his album cuts were just as memorable. He may have only given fans two albums before he died on March 9, 1997, but Biggie crafted a catalog that is still celebrated 15 years after his death. Songs like "Gimme the Loot" and "Ten Crack Commandments" resonated with fans without music videos or radio play.
Till this day, one of Lil' Cease's favorite B.I.G. songs is "Everyday Struggle," from Big's 1994 debut, Ready to Die. "I'm sure I was about 13,14," Cease said, recalling his age when his friend first tracked the record. "I was too young to understand everything in it, but I understood everything in it."
On "Everyday Struggle," the Notorious B.I.G. rapped with a hustler's remorse. Rather than brag about his crack sales, like rappers often do, Big painted a picture of the downside of the street life. He rhymed about his mother's disappointment with his lifestyle, the murder of his close friend "Two Techs" and horrific dope-fiend binges.
"I don't wanna live no mo'/ Sometimes I hear death knockin' at my front door/ I'm living every day like a hustle, another drug to juggle/ Another day, another struggle," he rapped on the hook.
"Just that right there was our story. I was out there 11, 12 years old trying to do that, trying to hustle, trying to get out there and make money," Cease said.
Lil' Cease estimates that Biggie was 19 years old when he recorded "Everyday Struggle"; to be able to paint such a vivid picture at such a young age was a rarity. "Just the music, the beat, the production and then the way Big was rhymin' — me knowing Big was only 19 years old when he was writin' all that stuff," he said. "I watched Puffy listen to it, I watched [Hot 97 DJ] Mister Cee and [former Source magazine editor] Matty C and 'em listen to it. They was lookin' at Big like he was a robot.
"It just made me feel proud because I was actually a part of that," Cease said.
Join MTV News as we celebrate the Notorious B.I.G.'s life on the 15th anniversary of his death. From now through Sunday, we'll be rolling out exclusive and commemorative content from Biggie's closest friends, collaborators and biggest fans. Investcorp Acquires $65M Mixed-Use Portfolio in California ...
By Barbra Murray, Contributing Editor
In the largest transaction to close in the Northern San Francisco Bay Area in 2012 to date, Investcorp has added a 14-property commercial real estate portfolio to its holdings in a partnership with PB&J Acquisitions. RNM Properties was the seller of the group of 14 office, industrial and retail assets, which encompasses approximately 840,600 square feet of Class A space.
Located primarily in Petaluma, the portfolio consists of nine office buildings, including 1800 and 2000 S. McDowell, four industrial properties and one retail destination. And now the work begins. Investcorp and PB&J plan to add value to the group through a leasing program designed to increase occupancy and retain the businesses that are currently gracing the tenant rosters.
?This acquisition of a diverse group of Class A properties presents a unique opportunity to generate solid income returns while also advancing leasing and operating income over a longer time horizon,? said Herb Myers, a managing director with Investcorp?s real estate team. ?The multi-assets nature of this portfolio should also enable us to pursue, opportunistically, a number of value creating options.?
Investcorp, is the U.S.-based real estate division Investcorp, which is headquartered in Bahrain. The company is among a slew of foreign investors that are eagerly snapping up pieces of the American pie as the national real estate market emerges from its downturn. Foreign entities, buoyed by attractive currency exchange rates, lead the pack of investors in US real estate, outpacing REIT, pension fund and private investor activity, according to a 2012 trends report by the Urban Land Institute and PwC. ?A tremendous amount of capital sits waiting to be deployed.?

Republicans heap blame on Obama for Afghan crisis
A crisis in Washington's relations with Afghan President Hamid Karzai sparked attacks Sunday on President Barack Obama, as Republican presidential candidates heaped blame on him for the troubles in the US exit strategy.
Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney and former Pennsylvania senator Rick Santorum assailed the president on separate television talks shows as creating an untenable situation by setting a hard-and-fast 2014 timetable for a US withdrawal.
"If the game plan is we're leaving irrespective of whether we're going to succeed or not, then why are we still there?" asked Santorum on ABC's "This Week." "Let's either commit to winning, or let's get out."
The attacks from the right came as the administration was struggling to contain the fallout from a massacre of 16 villagers, many of them women and children, by a US soldier who allegedly went on a rampage March 11 in southern Afghanistan.
The White House said Obama and the Afghan leader reaffirmed their commitment to the 2014 withdrawal plan in a phone call Friday.
But Karzai's warning that he was "at the end of the rope" and public demands for an earlier pullback of US troops to their bases underscored the yawning divide between the allies at a time of sharply declining public support for the 10-year-old war in the United States.
Republicans seized on the issue to accuse Obama of failing to heed his commanders demands for more troops, for withdrawing a surge force too soon and failing to demonstrate US commitment to a successful outcome.
"I think it is plain to see that the conditions there are not going very well," said Romney on Fox News Sunday. "And I lay part of the blame for that on the lack of leadership on the part of our president, both in terms of his interactions with Karzai and with leaders there as well as his relative detachment from our military commanders there."
"This does have the indications of a similarly failed withdrawal or a failed completion effort on the part of this president, just like we saw in Iraq. He likewise failed in the way we left Iraq," he said.
But neither he nor Santorum, who are vying to run against Obama in November, were clear about what they would do if they were in the president's place.
Santorum said he agreed in some respects with former House speaker Newt Gingrich, a rival for the Republican nomination who said last week it was likely the US mission in Afghanistan was "not doable."
Romney said the current timetable should remain in effect "unless of course there are changes in conditions that suggest a faster withdrawal."
Advocates of an extended US presence in Afghanistan, meanwhile, argued that the decline in US public support for the war reflected a loss of confidence in the US strategy.
"Do we know what we are doing when these incidents happen and President Karzai makes the statements that he has done," said Zalmay Khalilzad, a former US ambassador to Kabul under president George W. Bush, on CNN.
"It raises questions in the minds of people, do we know what we are doing? Are we succeeding?"
Senator John McCain, a staunch proponent of a large and continuing US military presence in Afghanistan, disputed the perception that the mission was failing, insisting that the relationship between US troops and Afghanistan "is wonderful."
If Obama does not accelerate the withdrawal of US forces, he said, "we can withdraw with a stable government in Afghanistan."
He acknowledged, however, that the massacre of civilians "really sets back everything a great deal."

Rebel Rouser or is it the Rabble Rouser? | Cocktail Whisperer
I just spent the past week down at the Charleston Wine and Food Festival. This explains why there wasn?t a Friday cocktail last week. I was too busy. In between judging the Iron Mixology Competition and that lovely party at Nathalie Dupree?s home- time just slipped away from me. Maybe it was the soft Southern accent, or the Antebellum architecture.
Of course I?d be remiss if I didn?t mention the lovely luncheon I enjoyed at Martha Lou?s Kitchen, feasting on a fried pork chop with a side of textbook macaroni and cheese- I?m getting hungry all over again. Almost makes the 15- hour drive from New Jersey to Charleston and 16 hours to return home worth while.
If you are ever in Charleston, South Carolina- please visit Martha Lou?s Kitchen over on Morrison Drive. Order the fried chicken or a fried pork chop.
Don?t deny yourself a large cup of sweet iced tea. It?s so sweet that your teeth will ache for days afterwards and if you have the chance, please say hello to Martha Lou for me.
She?s a true American treasure- Don?t let Saveur Magazine tell you that- they did already.
This leads me to the cocktail of the week. It is called the Rabble Rouser. Not because I am one- perhaps in a small way, yes I am- more of a Rebel Rouser than a true dyed in the wool Rabble Rouser- but I digress. This cocktail is better enjoyed by the bucketful. In a crowd? Certainly yes.
I like to stir things up. It is my m?tier.
Cocktails like this one can create a certain tension. This means to an outsider, to stir up trouble. I?ve always said of myself- trouble finds me.

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) ? Kansas' Thomas Robinson knew there could be games like this in the NCAA tournament.
Sometimes it's just a matter of surviving.
The No. 2-seeded Jayhawks did, taking their first lead late and holding on to beat No. 10 seed Purdue 63-60 Sunday night and advance to the regional semifinals for the fifth time in six years.
"Something like that is stuff you have to face to win a championship," Robinson said. "Coach said there is going to be that ugly game. That was as ugly as I've seen."
Elijah Johnson scored 18 points, including the go-ahead basket in the final minute, to help Kansas overcome a monster shooting performance by Purdue's Robbie Hummel.
In the West Regional game, Florida defeated surprising Norfolk State 84-50 after blowing open the game with an early 25-0 run.
Kansas (29-6) heads to St. Louis to play North Carolina State in the Midwest Regional and Florida (25-10) travels to Phoenix to play Marquette in West Regional.
The Jayhawks' Robinson fought through double-teams all night for 11 points and 13 rebounds against Purdue, and they got enough production from everyone else to erase a 10-point second-half deficit.
Robinson, the Jayhawks' national player-of-the-year candidate, was just 2 for 12 and Tyshawn Taylor was 4 of 11.
"If Elijah didn't turn around," Robinson said, "we would have lost that game tonight."
Purdue was clinging to a 60-59 lead and had the ball and under a minute remaining when Lewis Jackson, the shot clock winding down, lost control at the top of the key. Johnson picked it up and went the other way for the go-ahead lay-in with 23.3 seconds left.
Hummel missed an open 3-pointer at the other end and Taylor scored a transition dunk for the Jayhawks with 2.5 seconds left, giving the roughly 15,000 fans who had made the three-hour drive from the Kansas campus reason to let out a roar for one of the first times all night.
After a timeout, Purdue sharpshooter Ryne Smith managed to get off a decent look at a long, potential tying 3-pointer. It hit off the backboard, clanked off the rim and fell away.
"It stinks," Purdue coach Matt Painter said. "It stinks to lose."
Hummel finished with 26 points and nine rebounds for the Boilermakers (22-13), who were trying to reach the round of 16 for the third time in four years. D.J. Byrd and Terone Johnson had 10 points each for Purdue.
The Jayhawks' biggest lead all night was their final one. They overcame a rough night by Robinson by getting 10 points from Taylor and 10 more from Travis Releford.
"Coach said that for us to win this game, we have to make them play bad in the first half. We didn't," Taylor said. "We made eight turnovers, they missed 10 shots in the first half and got six offensive rebounds. So we weren't doing anything to stop them. We kept grinding. When we needed the stops, we knuckled down and got them."
Purdue couldn't have gotten off to a much better start.
Neither could Hummel.
The senior forward hit his first four shots, three of them from beyond the arc, and followed up his first miss with another basket with 11:46 to go in the first half that made it 19-8.
He proved too quick for Robinson to guard and too strong for Kevin Young as the Jayhawks kept searching for anybody who could put a body on him ? they even tried seldom-used Justin Wesley.
The miserable start by Kansas was enough for Self to scream at his team during one defensive trip down floor, "You told me you were ready!"
Hardly seemed to be the case.
Kansas opened the game by missing 15 of its first 17 shots and all seven of its 3-point tries, compounding lousy offense by getting into foul trouble. Taylor, Young and Releford all sat stretches in the first half after picking up two early fouls.
The Jayhawks finally trimmed the lead to 31-30 with under 3 minutes left in the first half, but Lewis Jackson got inside for a basket, and Hummel managed to swish a closely guarded 3 from about 30 feet as the shot clock wound down to make it 36-30 at the break.
Hummel had 22 points on 7-of-8 shooting in the first half, while the Jayhawks' trio of stars ? Robinson, Taylor and Johnson ? managed 12 points on a combined 4-for-18.
"I wanted to come out and be aggressive, especially the first half. It seemed like everything I was taking was going in," Hummel said. "It was a crazy feeling you have as a player."
Earlier in the day, Florida put an end to the feel-good story that was Norfolk State.
Any hope Norfolk State had of matching the upset it pulled against Missouri on Friday vanished as the Gators went on a 25-0 run in the first half.
The Gators had a business-as-usual air about them after dispatching the Spartans (26-10). After all, Florida is 17-2 in NCAA tournament games since 2005-06. Combined with their 71-45 win over Virginia on Friday, the Gators left Omaha with two wins by a total margin of 60 points.
Not too shabby for a No. 7 seed.
"There are certain guys who want this kind of stage," Florida coach Billy Donovan said. "In this tournament you have to have players who play fearlessly on both ends of the floor and are not worried about making mistakes and are competitive and are driven to want to be great."
