NJ's barrier islands are scenes of devastation

(AP) ? New Jersey's delicate barrier islands, long and slender strips of land cherished by generations of sunbathing vacationers and full-time residents alike, are a hazardous wasteland of badly eroded shore, ruined beachfront homes, flooded streets and damaged utilities.

The full extent of the devastation on the island that hosts MTV's "Jersey Shore" began to come into sharper focus Wednesday, and it wasn't a pretty sight. Signs of the good life that had defined wealthy enclaves like Bayhead and Mantoloking lie scattered and broken: $3,000 barbecue grills buried beneath the sand and hot tubs cracked and filled with seawater.

Nearly all of the homes were seriously damaged, and many were destroyed ? no trace of them left.

"This," said Harry Typaldos, who owns the Grenville Inn in Mantoloking, "I just can't comprehend."

New Jersey got the brunt of superstorm Sandy, which made landfall in the state and killed six people here. More than 2 million customers were without power as of Wednesday afternoon, down from a peak of 2.7 million.

Some parts of the shore might never look the same, said Gov. Chris Christie.

The governor joined President Barack Obama aboard Marine One on Wednesday afternoon for an aerial tour of the storm damage along the shore ? the economic engine that powers New Jersey's $35.5 billion tourism industry.

Nearly 48 hours after the hurricane made landfall, the most densely populated state in the nation was still very much in a state of emergency.

Most mass transit systems remained shut down, leaving hundreds of thousands of commuters braving clogged highways and quarter-mile lines at gas stations. Closed, too, were Atlantic City's casinos. And Christie postponed Halloween until Monday, saying trick-or-treating wasn't safe in towns with flooded and darkened streets, fallen trees and downed power lines.

Nearly 20,000 residents were stranded in Hoboken, just across the Hudson River from Manhattan, amid accusations that officials have been slow to deliver food and water. One man blew up an air mattress and floated to City Hall, demanding to know why supplies hadn't gotten out. Public Safety director Jon Tooke defended the city's response, saying at least 25 percent of Hoboken remained under water and emergency personnel and the National Guard are working round the clock.

On the opposite end of the state, hairdresser Robert Dennis desperately tried to flag a ride out of Atlantic City to work in Pleasantville, several miles away. His car was flooded and taxis wouldn't take him because they can't get back in.

"I'm ready to walk," he said. "I didn't plan on getting stuck. I thought I had my car at a high enough level."

In Little Egg Harbor Township, a coastal community bordering the southern end of Long Beach Island, streets and yards were clogged with battered pleasure craft ? and the docks they had been tied to. Residents still had at least 2 feet of water in their homes.

New Jersey has 127 miles of Atlantic Ocean shoreline. Most of the beach destinations, including famed spots like Seaside Heights, Atlantic City and Wildwood, are on barrier islands that range in width from a few hundred feet to a couple miles. The islands are so narrow that bay met ocean during the height of the storm, with water covering entire islands and making a mockery of the sandbags that some had placed around their homes.

Conditions were still too hazardous Wednesday to allow residents back on Long Beach Island, where cars were buried in 5 feet of sand, crews used heavy equipment to clear the roads and National Guard members went door-to-door, checking on residents who stayed.

One bright spot: The newer oceanfront homes built on 35-foot pilings did what they were supposed to do: upper floors remained intact, though many were damaged. About a dozen older homes were swept off their foundations, according to Long Beach Township Mayor Joe Mancini.

Some residents believe that beach replenishment projects that built up dunes protected the southern end of Long Beach Island.

"I felt pretty protected in my house because of all the beach replenishment," said Will Randall-Goodwin, a 21-year-old Rutgers University student who stayed in his family's home through the storm.

Long Beach Island and its northern neighbor still lacked sewer service, water, gas and electricity. The stench of natural gas hung in the air, indicating broken lines.

In Brick Township, as many as 10 homes caught fire during the storm, when they were knocked from their foundations, rupturing gas lines, said Brick Township Police Sgt. Keith Reinhard. Some gas lines continued to burn on Wednesday. In Mantoloking, a car from a kiddie ride on the Seaside Heights boardwalk 10 miles south had washed up and was marooned in the sand.

Peter Green said a neighbor told him she saw a group of youths carrying away golf clubs they had stolen from his wrecked home.

"There are people looting this area, and there's no law and order right now. They feel it's their opportunity," he said.

Police appeared to be doing what they could to protect the damaged multimillion-dollar homes.

A machine-gun carrying police officer patrolled the sand and questioned a group of kids with backpacks, asking if they'd taken anything. They said no, and their father vouched for them.

A passerby then asked the officer, "Is this Mantoloking?"

"It was," came the reply.

Obama balancing storm response with campaigning

WASHINGTON (AP) ? President Barack Obama has spent months trying to balance his re-election bid with running the government.

Now, just when his campaign needs him the most, with little more than a week before the election, his official job is beckoning.

Republican challenger Mitt Romney, too, faces questions about how to conduct his campaign as a superstorm charges toward the East Coast. But as president, it's Obama who oversees the federal government's preparations for the looming storm and it's Obama who will bear the responsibility for any missteps.

With that in mind, Obama scrapped some campaign events for Monday, as well as Tuesday morning. He planned to return to the White House Monday afternoon to monitor the storm and the government's response.

"My first priority has to be making sure that everything is in place" to help those affected by the storm, Obama told campaign workers in Orlando, Fla., on Sunday night. He said the storm meant he would "not be able to campaign quite as much over the next few days."

Still, ripping up Obama's strategically planned travel schedule was something his Chicago-based campaign was loath to do unless absolutely necessary.

In the tight race, the candidates have few opportunities left to blitz through the most competitive states, trying to build momentum and make a final pitch to undecided voters.

The president's handling of the storm could sway those late-breaking voters. If Obama is perceived as a strong leader who shows command in a crisis, some undecided voters may be compelled to back the president. But a botched response or a sense that he's putting politics over public safety could weaken his support at a point in the race where there's little chance to reverse course.

"I think that the president of the United States is the commander in chief. The American people look to him, and I'm sure he will conduct himself and play his leadership role in a fine fashion. So I would imagine that might help him a little bit," said Arizona Sen. John McCain, who lost to Obama in 2008.

"But I'm not sure it will affect votes. People have been exposed to this very long campaign," he said on CBS' "Face the Nation."

Obama advisers say they've learned the lessons from President George W. Bush's widely criticized response to Hurricane Katrina. Bush was seen as ineffective and out of touch, and his presidency never recovered.

That's why Obama's team has moved quickly throughout the year to avoid the impression that the president was shirking his responsibilities, even as the campaign ramped up.

When separate crises struck Colorado this summer ? destructive wildfires and a mass shooting at a movie theater ? Obama hastily arranged trips to meet with victims and their families. When a hurricane barreled through the Gulf Coast ahead of the Democratic Convention, the president added a stop in New Orleans to his preconvention itinerary.

But those decisions were far easier than what's facing Obama's team. Back then, there was time to add or reschedule trips. Now, with just nine days until Election Day, time is a precious commodity and canceling trips may mean never having the chance to make them up.

Hurricane Sandy was expected to hit the East Coast late Monday, then combine with two winter weather systems as it moves inland, creating a hybrid superstorm. At least four battleground states are likely to be hit: New Hampshire, North Carolina, Ohio and Virginia.

Obama plans to spend every day between now and Nov. 6 on the road in most of those states and others, though his schedule does call for him to be back in Washington some nights.

In canceling Obama's event Monday in Virginia, aides also considered the optics of urging thousands of people to venture out to a political rally in the midst of a raging storm.

Still, it was clear Obama's team was working hard to ensure that the president could keep campaigning as long as possible before he was needed back in Washington.

His departure for Florida, where he'll hold an event with Bill Clinton, was moved up from Monday morning to Sunday night to ensure Obama made it to the Orlando area. But the campaign canceled appearances at two other events, in Virginia and Ohio. Vice President Joe Biden will join Clinton at the Ohio rally.

Obama was scheduled to campaign Tuesday evening in Wisconsin, though that too was in flux.

Romney canceled three events in Virginia on Sunday and planned to spend the day campaigning with running mate Paul Ryan in Ohio.

If bad weather keeps people in hard-hit battleground states from going to the polls, it could mess up the campaigns' carefully crafted get-out-the-vote efforts.

Jennifer Psaki, Obama's campaign spokeswoman, said the Democratic ticket was urging people to vote early when they can, especially if it helps them get to the polls before the storm.

"Safety comes first," she said. "And that's the case with early voting as well."

Egypt says US Consulate attack suspect was Libyan

CAIRO (AP) ? A man suspected of links to the deadly attack on the U.S. Consulate was a Libyan national who turned his rented apartment into a small weapons cache before he died, an Egyptian security official said Thursday.

The suspect identified as 35-year-old Karim el-Azizi detonated an explosive device on Wednesday after briefly exchanging gunfire with security forces that had surrounded his building in Cairo's northern suburb of Nasr City, the official said. The blast set fire to the apartment and destroyed parts of the building.

Along with el-Azizi's body, a large number of explosives were found in the apartment, including 15 rocket-propelled grenades and 195 hand grenades.

During the raid, security forces arrested four other men in a nearby suburb, the official said, describing them as part of a "terrorist cell." He declined to say if the four were linked to el-Azizi, and spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to brief the media.

El-Azizi is the first suspect Egypt has linked to the Benghazi attack, although Tunisia has already said it arrested a 28-year-old Tunisian linked to it. Interior Ministry spokesman Tarrouch Khaled said Wednesday that the suspect, Ali Harzi, was in custody in Tunis, facing terrorism charges.

Earlier this month, Defense Secretary Leon Panetta said the U.S. has been looking into the arrests of two Tunisian men detained in Turkey, reportedly in connection with the attacks.

Google Compute Engine for OpenStack. But Why?

Cloudscaling, the leading provider of open cloud infrastructure solutions for cloud-ready applications has recently launched a new compute API set for OpenStack that is compatible with Google Compute Engine (GCE), Google?s Infrastructure-as-a-Service (IaaS) compute service. This makes the OpenStack the first IaaS software solution to support the GCE APIs. The update was given by the Cloudscaling on their official blog.

The GCE API is quite similar to the two existing compute APIs ? EC2 and Nova, with the edge that it is implemented as first-class citizens of OpenStack Compute and provide a RESTful API that is highly compatible with Google Compute Engine.

Chinese tires

STORY HIGHLIGHTS

  • The Chinese "were flooding us" with cheap tires, Obama says
  • "Gov. Romney criticized me for being too tough in that tire case"
  • Romney said Obama's action was "decidedly bad for the nation"

(CNN) -- In Monday's foreign policy debate, President Barack Obama said Gov. Mitt Romney had criticized his administration for being too tough against China, and bringing a protectionist case at the World Trade Organization.

The statement: Obama cited a case in which the Chinese "were flooding us" with cheap tires. "And we put a stop to it and as a consequence saved jobs throughout America. I have to say that Gov. Romney criticized me for being too tough in that tire case; said this wouldn't be good for American workers and that it would be protectionist," Obama said.

The facts: In 2009, the Obama administration sought tariffs against China for dumping tires into the United States. The World Trade Organization upheld the tariffs.

On its website, Romney's campaign cites where the Republican candidate addressed the case in his 2010 book "No Apology."

"President Obama's action to defend American tire companies from foreign competition may make good politics by repaying unions for their support of his campaign, but it is decidedly bad for the nation and our workers," Romney said. "Protectionism stifles productivity."

The result was indeed inherently protectionist, according to Douglas Paal, vice president for studies at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace.

"It means it will raise prices for American consumers on tires, both domestic and imported," Paal said.

But the case was a minor one in the overall scheme of things, he added. Both sides have engaged in such symbolic activity, "but neither is willing to take action that would seriously affect economic relations between our two economies," he added.

The subject of China has been raised over and over again during the campaign, with each candidate accusing the Chinese of stealing American jobs through unfair trade practices.

In broad terms, both men offered similar views, even using some of the same language:

"China is both an adversary, but also a potential partner in the international community if it's following the rules," Obama said. "So my attitude coming into office was that we are going to insist that China plays by the same rules as everybody else."

"They're making some progress; they need to make more," said Romney, who vowed to label China a currency manipulator on his first day as president. "They have to understand we want to trade with them. We want a world that's stable. We like free enterprise, but you got to play by the rules."

First, has China really stolen U.S. jobs? The numbers say yes. Since China entered the World Trade Organization in 2001, the U.S. trade deficit with China "eliminated or displaced more than 2.7 million U.S. jobs," according to a report published in August by the Economic Policy Institute, a nonpartisan think tank.

The primary category from which jobs have been lost has been in the manufacturing sector.

The candidates have complained because, while the United States allows the free market, in large part, to dictate how much a dollar is worth and how much people will be paid in the United States, China uses its power to keep wages low.

So, while the Bureau of Labor Statistics says the average employer has to pay about $35 per hour in salary and benefits to hire a worker on a production line, a Chinese factory pays only about $1.36 per hour for the same work.

In response, many companies have moved jobs to China to take advantage of the lower wages. Consequently, Chinese products tend to be cheaper to buy all over the world.

The result has been that Chinese exports to the United States have soared in recent years, while U.S. exports to China have lagged far behind.

What can a U.S. president do about that?

Probably not much. If the United States were to raise trade barriers, China could do the same. If the United States were to forbid U.S.-based companies from shipping jobs to China, that might leave U.S. companies less competitive in the world market.

And if China were to say it is no longer interested in buying U.S. debt, that could make it harder for the U.S. government to borrow the money it needs to operate.

The conclusion: In the tire case above, Obama is correct in his characterization of Romney's position. In the larger case of what to do about U.S.-China relations, both candidates have promised to get tough. But that will hardly be the last word.

Scientists convicted for not predicting quake

Maurizio Degl'innocenti / EPA, file

More than 300 people died after a quake in L'Aquila, Italy on April 6, 2009. The city was strewn with rubble and thousands left homeless.

By Peter Jeary, NBC News

A court in the Italian city of L?Aquila on Monday convicted six scientists and one government official of manslaughter for failing to give sufficient warning of a fatal earthquake that hit in 2009.

The judge sentenced each man to six years in jail and ordered them to pay compensation and legal fees.

The prosecution case had centered on a meeting the seven defendants, members of a commission on natural disasters, held in L?Aquila on March 31 2009, in which they told residents there was no cause for concern after a series of minor shocks had rocked the city in the preceding six months.

Less than a week later, in the early hours of April 6, a 6.3-magnitude quake?reduced much of the medieval city to rubble, leaving 309 people dead and more than 60,000 homeless, according to news reports at the time.

In a? memo issued after the March 31 meeting, the experts concluded that it was "improbable" that there would be a major quake, although they stopped short of entirely excluding the possibility.

The public prosecutor, Fabio Picuti, had accused the defendants of giving "inexact, incomplete and contradictory information" about whether the smaller tremors should have constituted grounds for an official quake warning.

Picuti acknowledged that predicting where, when and with what force a quake would strike is scientifically impossible, but said the risk of a big temblor was not taken seriously enough. He argued the commission?s discussions were too generic and completely failed to address the risk at hand.

?The key word in this trial is the word analysis. How do you proceed with an analysis of risk, or an analysis of seismic risk? Do you proceed in a manner that the defendants have shown us???Picuti said in comments to the court on Monday.?

Defense lawyer Franco Coppi told the court it would indeed be a problem if the risk had been foreseen and inevitable.

?But if an event cannot be foreseen, and more importantly if it is unavoidable,? Coppi said. ?It is impossible to speak about how a risk has not been foreseen."

Italy's long earthquake history hidden in ancient records

The decision to prosecute the seven, who are among leading figures in Italian seismology, had caused alarm among the scientific community.

In a report commissioned by the Italian government in the immediate aftermath of the L?Aquila disaster, the International Commission of Earthquake Forecasting for Civil Protection (ICEF) highlighted the many difficulties of making accurate time-sensitive predictions, within timescales usually calculated in decades, not weeks or months.?

But the ICEF report?s findings also called for better public communication, not just of day-to-day temblor hazards but also by setting alert levels that take into account the advantage of being psychologically prepared for when a quake hits.

Scientists on trial for failing to predict Italian quake

An open letter to Italian president Giorgio Napolitano, signed by more than 5,000 members of the international scientific community, criticized the proceedings.

In a separate letter?to the Italian president, the American Association for the Advancement of Science called the charges "unfair and na?ve," saying, "There is no accepted scientific method for earthquake prediction that can be reliably used to warn citizens of an impending disaster."

Despite the protests, the trial opened in September 2011.

The seven convicted of manslaughter were:

Enzo Boschi, then-president of Italy's National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology (INGV) in Rome;

Franco Barberi, at the University of 'Rome Tre';

Mauro Dolce, head of the seismic-risk office at the national Department of Civil Protection in Rome;

Claudio Eva, from the University of Genova;

Giulio Selvaggi, director of the INGV?s National Earthquake Centre in Rome;

Gian Michele Calvi, president of the European Centre for Training and Research in Earthquake Engineering in Pavia;

and a government official, Bernardo De Bernardinis, then vice director of the Department of Civil Protection.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.

Continue Well in Your Home School: A Medieval Mish Mash in ...

Dear friends,

My English class at our home school co-op was a bit of a mish mash today. ?My assistant Dawn (who is actually now my co-teacher) presented a grammar lesson on conjunctions and interjections, and then I took over for the rest of the class. ?In their history class earlier in the day, my seven students are learning medieval history, with lessons on St. Columba, St. Gregory the Great, and Japan in their assignments this coming week. ?I decided to put my laptop computer to use to turn their history lessons into English lessons too. ?(I love to integrate the school subjects with related literature!)

For poetry, we read "The Prayer of St. Columba." ?The chants and prayers of the early church were passed down from century to century, a potent form of devotional communication. ?While reading this prayer, we talked about the use of repetition ("Let me...") and parallelism in the first four stanzas. ?We also talked about the historical context (the "isle" is Iona in Scotland) and?the vocabulary of monasticism, such as?liturgy, chant,?and?cell.

The Prayer Of St. Columba

Columba crossingLet me bless almighty God,
whose power extends over sea and land,
whose angels watch over all. Let me study sacred books to calm my soul:
I pray for peace,
kneeling at heaven's gates. Let me do my daily work,
gathering seaweed, catching fish,
giving food to the poor.

Let me say my daily prayers,
sometimes chanting, sometimes quiet,
always thanking God.

Delightful it is to live
on a peaceful isle, in a quiet cell,
serving the King of kings.

Next, speaking of chants, St. Gregory, who was a reluctant pope (preferring the simple life of a monk), is most known for the chants named after him. ?We listened to a short one.

Gregorian Chants:
Then, more poetry, this time Japanese style! ?I explained the basic structure of haiku -- first line 5 syllables, second line 7 syllables, third line 5 syllables -- and that it is usually about a nature theme and uses a word that reveals the season. ?This was not an in-depth lesson. ?Maybe next week we will actually try writing some. ?I just wanted them to get a taste of it to whet their appetites. ?Here is one web page that helped me:?http://examples.yourdictionary.com/examples-of-haiku-poems.html Next up, since Dawn had made a passing reference to Schoolhouse Rock's song about Interjections in her grammar lesson, I found it via a quick Google search. ?Hilarious! ?Takes me back to childhood educational TV! ?(The series started airing in 1973 when I was 9 or 10. ?Now that's medieval!)

Schoolhouse Rock Interjections

Many Luscious Lollipops
More on grammar... I had wanted to read a book called Many Luscious Lollipops: A Book About Adjectives last week when they were studying... adjectives! ?I ran out of time then, but was able to tuck it in today.?

"It never fails to add details to what you write or say... a MESMERIZING, COLORFUL, and GLITTERING display."

Last but not least, our very favorite part of the class is when my students get to read some of their creative writing assignments. ?Last week's assignment, launching off the legend of King Arthur's birth, was to write about something special or interesting about their own birth or early childhood. ?This involved interviewing their parents. ?One of the girls wrote a hilariously true tale about sneaking out of her crib in the middle of the night at the tender age of 18 months, raiding the refrigerator, and painting her sleeping mother's back with sour cream. ?Never a dull moment in English class!

If we'd had more time, we would have reviewed our lessons on The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, our current literature selection. ?We'll get back to that next week. See: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe Study Guide, Part 1.

Las Vegas, NV, (October 22, 2012) Clinical evidence of the safety and effectiveness of electrical stimulation of a muscular valve in the esophagus demonstrates promising results in resolving symptoms of gastroesophageal reflux (GERD) and is being presented at the 77th Annual Scientific Meeting of the American College of Gastroenterology in Las Vegas, NV.

Three studies examined small numbers of patients who had a device implanted that uses low energy electrical pulses to strengthen a weak or dysfunctional lower esophageal sphincter (LES) which is the underlying cause of GERD or acid reflux. The LES is the ring shaped muscular valve that keeps the acidic contents of the stomach from the esophagus, or food tube.

Two studies by investigators Michael Crowell, Ph.D., FACG of Mayo Clinic Scottsdale and Edy Soffer, MD, FACG of the University of Southern California looked at various endpoints including esophageal acid exposure, improvement in GERD symptoms, and reduction of use of acid-suppressing medications known as proton pump inhibitors. In a study of 25 patients, the investigators found that 77 percent of patients reported either normalization or at least a 50 percent reduction in PPI use. At 12 months after the implant of the device, there was a statistically significant improvement in patients' scores on a scale measuring health-related quality of life for patients with GERD. The authors conclude, "Electrical stimulation of the lower esophageal sphincter is effective for treating patients with GERD over long-term year duration." The authors reported relationships with the Netherlands-based EndoStim BV which manufactures the device.

In a separate and unrelated study, Arjan Bredenoord, MD and colleagues at the University Medical Center Utrecht in Rotterdam, The Netherlands, presented a study at ACG of eleven patients with refractory GERD symptoms with devices implanted in the LES. They found that ten of the eleven patients (91 percent) were able to discontinue PPI medications. Overall, their research revealed a statistically significant improvement in patients' GERD symptoms, as well as a trend in improvement in their esophageal pH.

State extends deadline for JPS | WJTV

By: Associated Press |

JACKSON, Miss. (AP) - After threatening to revoke the accreditation of the Jackson city school system Nov. 1 over a failure to improve special education services, the state Board of Education reversed course Friday.

Officials now say they will give Mississippi's second largest school district until June 2013 if the district agrees to work with the state to solve the problems.

The district has until Oct. 30 to agree on a plan with the interim state superintendent to gain the extension. It calls for interim State Superintendent Lynn House and Jackson Superintendent Cedric Gray to mutually name a special education administrator who will report directly to the state Department of Education. The district must make sure its employees cooperate with the administrator and must agree to resolve "personnel concerns" raised by the administrator.

many things are happening around here. many good and exciting things.

there is the obvious, we have a new family member living in the house. he is such a joy and we are loving every minute with him. there have also been some opportunities that have come my way over the past six months that i have been working on and some that i am still pondering. there is an upcoming family trip that we have planned for november along with mine and aubrey's one year wedding anniversary. then there are the holidays, the new year and shortly after that it looks like this family of six will be setting out on a new adventure. there's been a change of plans, instead of moving right outside of austin where we originally decided to settle down, we are packing up and relocating out of state to embark on a new journey. we are a little nervous moving somewhere where we are strangers and we will miss so many amazing people here in texas, but with that comes a lot of excitement. we are excited to make new friends, to build new relationships and to explore a new city. the kids are excited for snow in the winters and who am i kidding, so are the adults. yes, there are many good things to come.

i am excited to share more of these things with you as they draw closer and nashville, we are excited to call you home. ahhh... i just said that out loud.

photos above: a boppy cover made for me by my friend elise and a sweet snake friend for sailor. a happy house plant that i have managed to keep alive longer than all other house plants before him. a sweet girl with barrettes in her hair and a sign that is hung on the front of our house. "la bonne vie" which means "the good life" in french. i really need to pick up my dslr more. i have been slacking in the picture taking department.
