No business in the business of Retail, no business in the Retail business, no business in the business of it services, BUT every business is just in one business - The Business of making profit. And managing any business be it CEO's CFO's, VP's Directors or any person dealing in P&L requires a expert training on Business Finance Management to turn out the profit.
And for that there's no better name than Anil Lamba the business finance coach who has trained the top 10 CEO's in India on Business Finance Management, has recently started online training program.:

The ability to understand the financial implication of every action on the organization?s bottom-line and then to ensure that only those actions are taken that strengthen the profitability and avoid doing those that hurt it is what finance management is all about. And this responsibility runs across the organization and is not the sole preserve of the finance or accounts department.

US equities sell-off goes on; futures slump

NEW YORK (AP) ? The momentum of a late sell-off on Wall Street carried over into a second day, sending U.S. futures and global stock markets into retreat.

Uncertainty over how committed the Fed remains to a massive bond-buying program scattered investors and overshadowed a Labor Department report Thursday that was slightly better than most economists had expected.

Dow Jones industrial futures slid 125 points to 15,195. S&P futures lost 16.3 points to 1,639.30. Nasdaq futures fell 26.75 points to 2,974.25.

U.S. stocks began selling off late Wednesday when minutes from the most recent Federal Reserve policy meeting left open the possibility that the U.S. may begin easing off stimulus measures that have helped send major indexes to record highs in recent weeks.

Several Federal Reserve policymakers appear to be leaning toward easing efforts to maintain record-low long-term interest rates.

Even though those actions would not be implemented, the officials said, unless the economic recovery accelerates, it created enough uncertainty about future Fed actions to send ripples overseas as markets opened.

The benchmark Nikkei 225 stock index tumbled more than 7 percent Thursday, the largest single-day decline since the March 2011 tsunami disaster.

The yield on 10-year Japanese government bonds rose briefly above 1 percent, the first time that has happened in a year.

Still, the U.S. recovery appears to be on track.

The Labor Department said Thursday that the number of Americans applying for unemployment benefits fell by 23,000 last week.

The less volatile four-week average ticked down 500 to 339,500. That's close to the five-year low of 338,000 registered the first week of May. The four-week average is 9 percent lower than in November.

And economists expect that the Commerce Department will report Thursday that new home sales rose again.

Retailers continue to publish quarterly earnings that are mostly strong. Both Dollar Tree and Perry Ellis topped Wall Street profit expectations.

Sears and The Gap post earnings after the closing bell.

A Quick Guide On Commercial Real Estate - Maynas Eric

There are a plethora of reasons you may be considering purchasing commercial real estate. That said, these reasons should only be considered legitimate if they are born from your knowledge of the market and your own needs. When it comes to commercial real estate, the more knowledge you have, the larger amount of money you will make. The ideas in the following paragraphs are an ideal way to begin discovering more knowledge concerning commercial real state, either as your initiation into this world or just an expansion of what you already are aware of.

You should negotiate if you are the seller or the buyer. Protect your interests by standing up for yourself regardless of who is on the other side of the table. Negotiate a fair price rather than accepting one that is too high or too low.

Whenever you are considering a commercial lease, you need to think about pest control. This is especially true when renting in an area that has a lot of bugs or rodents, so be sure to talk to the rental agent about some pest control policies.

TIP! If you?re a buyer or if you?re a seller, it?s important that you negotiate. Ensure that your opinion is known, and wrangle for the best price you can get on the property.

The Internet contains a lot of information for those interested in investing in real estate, whether they be experienced investors or novices. Learning is an ongoing process, and you can never know enough.

Residential property transactions are much less intricate and protracted than are commercial transactions. Keep in mind, though, that the complexity is required to ensure that your real estate investment gives you a high return.

Unit Building

TIP! Try practicing patience and remain calm, if you are considering purchasing any commercial real estate. Don?t enter into a commercial venture hastily.

If you have two commercial properties on your short list, you should buy the larger one, if at all possible. Getting the financing you need is going to be complicated whether you choose a five-unit building or a fifty-unit building. Think of it like purchasing in bulk; as you buy more, each individual unit costs less.

Do not hire a broker without finding out more about their past experience within commercial property. Make certain that they have experience and expertise in the community you are dealing in. Entering into an exclusive contract with that particular broker is a good idea.

NOI, also known as Net Operating Income, is a crucial metric to understand in the world of commercial real estate dealings. In order to be successful, the resulting number must be positive.

TIP! Location is essential to the commercial real estate. What type of neighborhood is the property in? Don?t forget to check out similar areas as well, in order to see how other neighborhoods are growing economically.

If you?d like to rent out the properties you purchase, it?s best to buy a simple building with solid construction. These types of buildings attract tenants more quickly than other buildings, as prospective tenants know that the building is less likely to have maintenance issues. Investing in good buildings will save you money on repairs later.

Make sure the property you are interested in has access to utilities. Every business has unique requirements, but for most, electric, water and sewer access will be required.

Advertise your property for sale locally and outside your region. Many people only think locals will buy their property, and that?s a mistake. There are many investors who are interested in financing properties which are outside their area as long as they are a great deal.

TIP! Commercial property dealings are exponentially more complicated and time intensive than buying a residential home is. The added time and effort are crucial, however, to getting the return that you want on your investment.

Take a tour of any property that you are interested in. Even better, have someone who knows commercial real estate tour the properties with you. You can then make an initial offer and begin the bargaining phase. Closely review any counteroffers you receive prior to making a final decision. Remember the decision is an important one, so take your time.

Write an easy-to-understand letter of intent, focusing on the biggest issues. You can worry about the little things later on. By coming to agreement on the larger issues, it will make the negotiations go much easier.

Get a site checklist if you are viewing more than one property. Get the responses from the first round of proposals, but make sure the property owners are aware of this before proceeding. There is nothing wrong with hinting that you have other properties in mind. This could help you score a better deal.

TIP! You need to make sure that the price you are asking for your real estate is a realistic price. The value of your property is determined by an entire series of different factors.

Commercial Real Estate

There are a myriad of reasons to expand your monetary investments into commercial real estate. All it takes is determination, and a good base of information. Take the tips you learned here and apply them to your own commercial real estate endeavors. They will help you reach your goal of maximum profits.

GRAPEVINE, Texas (AP) ? In one of their most dramatic choices in a century, local leaders of the Boy Scouts of America voted Thursday to ease a divisive ban and allow openly gay boys to be accepted into the nation's leading youth organization.

Gay adults will remain barred from serving as Scout leaders.

Of the local Scout leaders voting at their annual meeting in Texas, more than 60 percent supported the proposal.

Casting ballots were about 1,400 voting members of BSA's National Council who were attending their annual meeting at a conference center not far from BSA headquarters in suburban Dallas.

The vote will not end the wrenching debate over the Scouts' membership policy, and it could trigger defections among those on the losing side.

Some conservative churches that sponsor Scout units wanted to continue excluding gay youths, and in some cases threatened to leave the BSA if the ban were lifted.

More liberal Scout leaders ? while supporting the proposal to accept gay youth ? wanted the ban on gay adults lifted as well.

The BSA could also take a hit financially. Many Scout units in conservative areas feared their local donors would stop giving if the ban on gay youth were lifted, while many major corporate donors were likely to withhold donations if the ban had remained.

In January, the BSA executive committee suggested a plan to give sponsors of local Scout units the option of admitting gays as both youth members and adult leaders or continuing to exclude them. However, the plan won little praise, and the BSA changed course after assessing responses to surveys sent out starting in February to members of the Scouting community.

The BSA's overall "traditional youth membership" ? Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts and Venturers ? is now about 2.6 million, compared with more than 4 million in peak years of the past. It also has about 1 million adult leaders and volunteers.

Of the more than 100,000 Scouting units in the U.S., 70 percent are chartered by religious institutions.

Those include liberal churches opposed to any ban on gays, but some of the largest sponsors are relatively conservative denominations that have previously supported the broad ban ? notably the Roman Catholic Church, the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and Southern Baptist churches.

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints announced in April that it was satisfied with new proposal, and the National Catholic Committee on Scouting did not oppose it.

The BSA, which celebrated its 100th anniversary in 2010, has long excluded both gays and atheists.

Protests over the no-gays policy gained momentum in 2000, when the U.S. Supreme Court upheld the BSA's right to exclude gays. Scout units lost sponsorships by public schools and other entities that adhered to nondiscrimination policies, and several local Scout councils made public their displeasure with the policy.

Sports Business Awards bring some attention to Louisville

Among University of Louisville Tom Jurich's accomplishments in 2012 was getting an invitation for U of L to join the Atlantic Coast Conference.?

SportsBusiness Journal and SportsBusiness Daily, sister publications to Business First, handed out their annual honors Wednesday night in New York City, and Louisvillians had reason to cheer.

First, University of Louisville athletic director Tom Jurich was a finalist for AD of the Year recognition. (Jurich won the award in 2007.)

While this year's AD of the Year award went to the late Mal Moore, former athletic director at the University of Alabama, U of L fans can?t help but be elated about all that the Cardinals have accomplished in the past year. (Click here to read a report about accomplishments during Jurich's tenure at U of L.)

The local community also might be interested to know that the 2012 U.S. Grand Prix was recognized as Sports Event of the Year.

Given that the race was held at a new Formula One racetrack in Austin, Texas, why would Louisville residents care?

Because the president and CEO of the venue, Circuit of the Americas, is Steve Sexton, former president of Churchill Downs racetrack.

Sexton, who accepted the award on behalf of his company, led Churchill Downs Inc.?s (NASDAQ: CHDN) entertainment unit until it was dissolved, and he left the company in 2010. He has several former Churchill employees working with him at Circuit of the Americas.

The 2013 Sports Business Awards were held Wednesday at The New York Marriott Marquis at Times Square. They were attended by a crowd of sports celebrities and executives.

John R. Karman III covers these beats: Economic development and government, commercial real estate, transportation, utilities, sports business, lottery, tourism/conventions, higher education, nonprofits, Jeffersontown, Downtown, Central Area.

Forecast for Saturn's moon Titan: Wild weather could be ahead

May 22, 2013 ? Saturn's moon Titan might be in for some wild weather as it heads into its spring and summer, if two new models are correct. Scientists think that as the seasons change in Titan's northern hemisphere, waves could ripple across the moon's hydrocarbon seas, and hurricanes could begin to swirl over these areas, too. The model predicting waves tries to explain data from the moon obtained so far by NASA's Cassini spacecraft. Both models help mission team members plan when and where to look for unusual atmospheric disturbances as Titan summer approaches.

"If you think being a weather forecaster on Earth is difficult, it can be even more challenging at Titan," said Scott Edgington, Cassini's deputy project scientist at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory, Pasadena, Calif. "We know there are weather processes similar to Earth's at work on this strange world, but differences arise due to the presence of unfamiliar liquids like methane. We can't wait for Cassini to tell us whether our forecasts are right as it continues its tour through Titan spring into the start of northern summer."

Titan's north polar region, which is bejeweled with sprawling hydrocarbon seas and lakes, was dark when Cassini first arrived at the Saturn system in 2004. But sunlight has been creeping up Titan's northern hemisphere since August 2009, when the sun's light crossed the equatorial plane at equinox. Titan's seasons take about seven Earth years to change. By 2017, the end of Cassini's mission, Titan will be approaching northern solstice, the height of summer.

Given the wind-sculpted dunes Cassini has seen on Titan, scientists were baffled about why they hadn't yet seen wind-driven waves on the lakes and seas. A team led by Alex Hayes, a member of Cassini's radar team who is based at Cornell University, Ithaca, N.Y., set out to look for how much wind would be required to generate waves. Their new model, just published in the journal Icarus, improves upon previous ones by simultaneously accounting for Titan's gravity; the viscosity and surface tension of the hydrocarbon liquid in the lakes; and the air-to-liquid density ratio.

"We now know that the wind speeds predicted during the times Cassini has observed Titan have been below the threshold necessary to generate waves," Hayes said. "What is exciting, however, is that the wind speeds predicted during northern spring and summer approach those necessary to generate wind waves in liquid ethane and/or methane. It may soon be possible to catch a wave in one of the solar system's most exotic locations."

The new model found that winds of 1 to 2 mph (2 to 3 kilometers per hour) are needed to generate waves on Titan lakes, a speed that has not yet been reached during Titan's currently calm period. But as Titan's northern hemisphere approaches spring and summer, other models predict the winds may increase to 2 mph (3 kilometers per hour) or faster. Depending on the composition of the lakes, winds of that speed could be enough to produce waves 0.5 foot (0.15 meter) high.

The other model about hurricanes, recently published in Icarus, predicts that the warming of the northern hemisphere could also bring hurricanes, also known as tropical cyclones. Tropical cyclones on Earth gain their energy from the build-up of heat from seawater evaporation and miniature versions have been seen over big lakes such as Lake Huron. The new modeling work, led by Tetsuya Tokano of the University of Cologne, Germany, shows that the same processes could be at work on Titan as well, except that it is methane rather than water that evaporates from the seas. The most likely season for these hurricanes would be Titan's northern summer solstice, when the sea surface gets warmer and the flow of the air near the surface becomes more turbulent. The humid air would swirl in a counterclockwise direction over the surface of one of the northern seas and increase the surface wind over the seas to possibly 45 mph (about 70 kilometers per hour).

"For these hurricanes to develop at Titan, there needs to be the right mix of hydrocarbons in these seas, and we still don't know their exact composition," Tokano said. "If we see hurricanes, that would be one good indicator that there is enough methane in these lakes to support this kind of activity. So far, scientists haven't yet been able to detect methane directly."

The Cassini-Huygens mission is a cooperative project of NASA, the European Space Agency, and the Italian Space Agency. The mission is managed by JPL for NASA's Science Mission Directorate, Washington. JPL is a division of the California Institute of Technology in Pasadena, Calif.

Websense to go private for $907 million

(Reuters) - Websense Inc said it had agreed to be taken private by Vista Equity Partners in a deal that values the online security firm at about $907 million, a move that should come as a relief to investors after years of weak sales from its legacy business.

The offer of $24.75 per share represents a roughly 29 percent premium to Websense's Friday close. Websense shares rose to just above the offer price to a near two-year high in morning trading on the Nasdaq.

"After years of speculation, investors will be rubbing their eyes this morning that Websense finally got acquired and will go the route of other security software vendors that got the private equity bid," FBR Capital analyst Daniel Ives said.

The company joins a list of security software vendors, including Blue Coat that was bought by Thoma Bravo in 2011, to get private equity bids.

The company's growth rate has slowed in the past few years as its core web filtering business weakened and it reported a slight revenue decline last year.

Websense stock, which peaked at $34.87 in 2005, has since fallen 22 percent until Friday's close.

"This morning's acquisition speaks to the value of security software ... a surge of M&A activity is poised to hit the sector over the next six to 12 months as larger technology players and private equity look to get a larger piece of the security pie," he said.

Ives added that the acquisition would allow Websense to focus on its promising Triton business that makes web security gateway and e-mail security products.

Websense, which said it expected the deal to close before the end of the third quarter, said its senior management was expected to continue with the company and its headquarters would remain in San Diego.

BofA Merrill Lynch is the financial adviser to Websense and Cooley LLP its legal adviser.

Kirkland & Ellis LLP is Vista's legal adviser and J.P. Morgan Securities, RBC Capital Markets and Guggenheim Partners have agreed to provide debt financing for the deal.

Vista Equity is a private equity firm that invests primarily in software companies and has about $6 billion in assets.

Blogger threatened with $1 billion suit for writing about allegedly ...

Judge's gavel image courtesy of ShutterstockJeffrey Beall, a US academic librarian who uses his Scholarly Open Access blog to write about publishers' dubious practices, is being threatened with a $1 billion lawsuit by an Indian publishing group.

Beall keeps a running list, known as "Beall's list," of journals and publishers who do fishy things such as spamming scholars or charging bogus fees.

As Ars Technica's Nathan Mattise tells it, Beall's work has earned him notice from the likes of the New York Times.

In an April 7 article, the NYT tells of one such fishy scheme in the "exploding world of pseudo academia."

After signing up for what they thought was a prestigious entomology conference, scientists recruited for "Entomology-2013" (lose the hyphen and you've got the name of a legitimate, academically sanctioned conference) found that they had been recruited by email, as opposed to being vetted by leading academics.

To add insult to injury, those who agreed to appear were charged "a hefty fee" for the privilege of appearing on a podium and being able to pad their resume with the negligible accomplishment, according to the NYT.

It's one example of "a parallel world of pseudo-academia, complete with prestigiously titled conferences and journals that sponsor them," the NYT's Gina Kolata reports, with many journals and meetings adopting names that are "nearly identical to those of established, well-known publications and events."

Usher in Beall, the watchdog who keeps tabs on the publishing end of this predatory phenomenon.

Beall maintains a blacklist of what he calls "predatory open-access journals."

The list enumerated 20 publishers in 2010 and has since grown to more than 300.

Speaking with the NYT, Beall estimated at least 25 percent of the total number of open-access journals published today are predatory?as many as 4,000.

In fact, a clear example of predatory publishers' spamming ways are emails Beall gets from publishers asking to be added to his list of predators.

Beall writes here about one such email, wherein a correspondent who describes himself as "a internee for International Journal of Biology" asks that the journal be listed.

Beall investigated this one in particular and found deceit:

"The new journal [claims to have] 'published' four issues, but upon closer examination, it really hasn?t. It?s a ruse. Among the four issues, there are only six articles. At least some of them are copied from the former BioMed Central (BMC) journal called the Journal of Biology. In 2010, this journal merged with BMC Biology, and the merged journal is called BMC Biology."

"The publisher of the new journal has taken previously-published articles and edited them, changing some of the words, and published them as new original articles in the journal."

It is this kind of detective work that's raised the ire of the OMICS Publishing Group, based in India.

Lawsuit image courtesy of ShutterstockAccording to the Chronicle of Higher Education, Beall on Tuesday received a letter from an IP management firm's lawyer, warning him that he could be imprisoned for up to three years under India's Information Technology Act.

Beall has accused OMICS of spamming scholars with invitations to publish, quickly accepting their papers, then charging them a nearly $3,000 publishing fee after accepting a paper.

The Chronicle of Higher Education calls the six-page letter "rambling".

In the letter, the IP management firm calls Beall's blog "ridiculous, baseless, impertinent," and says that it "smacks of literal unprofessionalism and arrogance."

Here's an excerpt, all nonstandard English being sic:

"All the allegation that you have mentioned in your blog are nothing more than fantastic figment of your imagination by you and the purpose of writing this blog seems to be a deliberate attempt to defame our client. ? Our client perceive the blog as mindless rattle of a incoherent person and please be assured that our client has taken a very serious note of the language, tone, and tenure adopted by you as well as the criminal acts of putting the same on the Internet."

Is Beall in danger?

In India, Section 66A of the Information Technology Act makes it illegal to use a computer to publish "any information that is grossly offensive or has menacing character" or to publish false information. The punishment can, in fact, be as much as three years in prison.

According to the Chronicle, were the lawsuit to go forward, Beall would likely win in a US court, if the statements on his blog are in fact true. Were the suit filed in India, the situation gets hazier.

As it is, Section 66A has led to public pushback in India, which in turn has led to the government modifying the law such that complaints must now first be approved by a police deputy commissioner or inspector general.

If the suit does go to litigation, will Beall be looking at paying the Dr. Evil-ish sum of one billion dollars?

Beall thinks the idea is "silly":

"The amount is silly?I haven't done any damage to their operation. ? The case has no merit, in my opinion."

Good luck with the situation, Mr. Beall.

May you and other watchdogs not get hounded into silence by vindictive litigation, which this certainly sounds to me like it might be.

BoE's King sends message to successor Carney

By William Schomberg

LONDON (Reuters) - Bank of England Governor Mervyn King has urged successor Mark Carney not to bring to Britain his trademark policy of spelling out how long interest rates will remain low.

King also said the bank could not be run as "a one-man show," a sign of concern at high expectations that the arrival of the Canadian will lead to a quick fix for Britain's slow economy.

In an interview with Sky News television broadcast on Sunday, King praised Carney, saying Britain was fortunate to have him. "I think everyone will admire what he will achieve," he said before sending a message to his successor.

"He will work with the rest of the Monetary Policy Committee. It's not a one-man show," King said. "There is a very strong team of people here in the Bank of England which I have built up over 20 years."

King, who steps down at the end of June, said he was confident the bank under Carney would make the right judgments but he stressed his opposition to one of the changes that the Canadian is expected to make - signalling how long interest rates will remain low.

"What none of us can know of course, is what the right decisions will be down the road," King said. "They will have to made month-by-month, according to how the economy develops, and I am sure that they will make the right decision."

Carney was chosen as the next Bank governor last year by Chancellor George Osborne who hailed the former Goldman Sachs banker as "the outstanding central banker of his generation."

Osborne has asked Carney to report to him on the merits of adopting a system of signals about interest rates similar to that used in the United States.

There, the Federal Reserve has said interest rates will not go up unless unemployment falls or inflation expectations rise to specific levels.

Carney took what was seen as a bold step by adopting a similar policy in 2009 at the Bank of Canada, before the Fed's move, in an attempt to persuade households and businesses that the cost of borrowing was not going to rise in the near future.

But King and other BoE policymakers have warned that "forward guidance" risks undermining the credibility of a central bank if it has to change course more quickly than expected on interest rates. Getting agreement on how guidance could be used in Britain will be Carney's first big challenge.

CONCERN ABOUT HOUSING PLAN

In the interview with Sky, King expressed concern that a flagship British government scheme to boost mortgage lending must not become permanent like in the United States.

"We do not want what the United States have, which is a government-guaranteed mortgage market, and they are desperately trying to find a way out of that position," he said.

King also said more needed to be done to nurse the British economy back to health after some recent signs of recovery.

"We will need to do more to use up the spare capacity, and to get back to a healthy, growing economy. But we are in a recovery period now," he said.

King has voted for more BoE bond buying in recent months but most of the bank's policymakers oppose the idea.

He said the single biggest risk to Britain's nascent economic recovery was the crisis in the euro zone which was unlikely to be growing quickly "for a long while."

Britain's banks were on track to return to health after a series of reforms prompted by the financial crisis and which would be complete in one or two years' time.

"If we can get to end of this process, then we will have revolution in the way in which banking is handled and we will be able to be proud again of British banking," he said.

Obama Pivots to Jobs Tour at End of Scandal Filled Week

ap obama baltimore 01 mi 130517 wblog Obama Pivots to Jobs Tour at End of Scandal Filled Weekobama

After a week filled with political scandals, President Obama turned to promoting his jobs tour in his weekly address Saturday.

"That's why I like getting out of the Washington echo chamber whenever I can - because too often, our politics aren't focused on the same things you are. Working hard. Supporting your family and your community. Making sure your kids have every chance in life," Obama said in his weekly address Saturday.

"I'm going to keep trying to work with both parties in Washington to make progress on your priorities. Because I know that if we come together around creating more jobs, educating more of our kids, and building new ladders of opportunity for everyone who's willing to climb them - we'll all prosper, together," he said.

The president traveled to Baltimore, Md. Friday on his second stop for the "Middle Class Jobs and Opportunity Tour." He spoke at a dredging company, visited with children at an elementary school, and stopped at a community center focused on helping fathers and families.

Obama's trip came as he tried to pivot attention back to his second term agenda as a series of political scandals involving the IRS, Benghazi, and the Department of Justice dominated much of the week.

But while the president attempted to divert attention from the political scandals of the week, Republicans used the incidents as a rallying call to repeal the healthcare law.

"Now: just think about the fact that it's the IRS that will be responsible for enforcing many of these regulations. If we've learned anything this week, it's that the IRS needs less power, not more'" Rep. Andy Harris, R-MD, said in the GOP weekly address, "As a matter of fact, it turns out that the IRS official who oversaw the operation that's under scrutiny for targeting conservatives is now in charge of the IRS's ObamaCare office. You can't make this stuff up."

"Well here's the problem: the train wreck is already here. ObamaCare is knocking Americans off the ladder of opportunity, and the sooner we repeal it, the sooner we can start fixing health care for working families," he said.

Big bling free to celebs in Cannes 'gifting suites'

Celebs

Gather hundreds of celebrities and film executives on the French Riviera for the Cannes Film Festival and naturally, they need their glitter and glam.

One way the famous end up looking so good and so trendy is that often, they don't have to bring, or buy, their own fabulousness: They get special invitations to luxury "gifting suites" set up in hotel rooms at the film festival and can walk out with thousands of dollars of clothes and jewelry.

These rooms of swag aren't the only places where there's bling-related excitement to be found -- someone stole jewels meant for celebrities to wear on the red carpet straight from a hotel room very early on in the festival.

The Hollywood Reporter took a look inside some of these swag rooms stocked by famous brands including Chanel, Swarovski, Dior, and Jimmy Choo to find out what's up for grabs -- if you've got the right A-list name. Check out the video!

The White House says Obama will present the award to Carole King during a concert Wednesday. The program will include performances by King, Gloria Estefan, Billy Joel, Jesse McCartney, Emeli Sand?, James Taylor, and Trisha Yearwood.

King's hits during five decades of songwriting include "You've Got a Friend," ''So Far Away" and "(You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman."

Wednesday's concert will be the latest in the "In Performance at the White House" series.

According to PBS, the "In Performance at the White House" series:

"Began with an East Room recital by the legendary pianist Vladimir Horowitz in 1978, and since then has embraced virtually every genre of American music: pop, country, gospel, jazz and the blues among them. The series was created to showcase the rich fabric of American culture in the setting of the nation's most famous home. Is It Time To Reform The 401(k)? | Personal Finance | Minyanville's ...

Last month, PBS?s?Frontline?aired a blockbuster episode on America?s retirement system. You can?watch the whole thing free online.

It featured some of my heroes, like Vanguard?s John C. Bogle, and some of my favorite financial writers like?Helaine Olen and?Jason Zweig.

The show argued that America?s self-directed retirement system ? the 401(k) and similar products ? is complicated, expensive, and rife with conflicts of interest.

I agree, and I?ve written extensively about how 401(k)s charge hidden fees, offer bad investment options, and are generally incomprehensible.

But in discussing the show with some of my favorite financial thinkers, I realized that while everyone seems to agree that the system needs to be fixed, there?s a major philosophical divide about how to fix it.

Forgetting about political feasibility for the moment, the question is this: Should we reform the 401(k) or get rid of it and replace it with something else?

Small Steps

Allan Roth, a Utah-based certified financial planner and?blogger for?CBS?News, says we should give every worker access to the federal government?s Thrift Savings Plan (TSP).

?Personally, I?d love to roll my IRAs to the?TSP?to both get access to the G fund and lower cost stock funds,? says Roth.

The?TSP?is the model for what every 401(k) should be like: Its only investment options are ultra-low-cost index funds, plus the G fund, a government bond fund that never loses principal.

?Americans need to save more and the best way to get them to do this is to force them to affirmatively opt out of saving,? says Dave O?Brien, a certified financial planner in Midlothian, Virginia.

O?Brien sees the 401(k) system from both sides; he advises clients who are saving for retirement and also companies who want to design a better 401(k) for their employees.

All too often, O?Brien sees people taking 401(k) loans for foreseeable emergency expenses. ?Participants should be encouraged to save into an?FDIC-insured emergency fund account before saving into their qualified plan in order to be eligible for a loan,? he says.

He continues, ?Far too many people borrow from their 401(k) because they have no cash saved to pay for the new transmission, etc.?

I?d love to see Roth and O?Brien?s reforms implemented. I?m eager to roll my?IRA?into the?TSP?without having to get a federal job, too.

But as much as I rail against bad funds and high 401(k) fees, I?ve become increasingly skeptical that any voluntary approach to retirement saving will produce the result we presumably want from our retirement system: allowing people to retire at a reasonable age and preserve (at least approximately) their pre-retirement standard of living.

Why We Fall Behind

Here?s a thought experiment:

Let?s say all mortgages were structured as a 30-year loan with no monthly payments and a 100% balloon payment due at the end. The homebuyer would be responsible for setting aside, say, $300,000 over the course of 30 years then handing it over to the mortgage holder as a lump sum.

How many people would keep up with their mortgage payments under this system? That is: after 20 years, what percentage of homeowners would have $200,000 saved, and how many would be behind?

The answer is obvious, right?

Practically everyone would be behind. It?s not because they?re lacking in personal responsibility; it?s because the rules of the game are dumb.

What?s the difference between this hypothetical and saving for retirement? Basically nothing, except that in the real world, you get punished in the short term for not making your mortgage payment but get punished in the long term for failing to save for retirement.

And psychologically, it?s much harder to change your behavior to avoid long-term pain than short-term pain. Long-term consequences just don?t feel real, and this is a fact of human psychology.

And saving for retirement is much more complicated than paying off a mortgage, so all the more reason to weasel out of it.

Tess Vigeland, the former host of American Public Media?s?Marketplace Money?and now a freelance writer and voiceover artist, says, ?Based on the emails and calls I fielded in six years hosting Marketplace Money.?

?I don?t see how we can expect people to parse 401(k) options and statements when they (a) have trouble balancing their checkbooks and (b) don?t understand how CDs work,? she says

The Role of Financial Literacy

It?s easy to respond to this line of reasoning by saying, okay, fine: We need to do a better job of teaching people that saving for retirement is important and how to use the tools they have available.

?As for the argument that we need more education and advice, how much more could there be?? asks Vigeland.

She says, ?There are thousands of financial advisers. There are hundreds of websites with all kinds of information to read and try to understand. There are even great radio shows that try their best to clarify and help out. And yet, we still have this problem. So clearly it?s not working.?

One obvious (and politically impossible) approach is to expand Social Security or supplement it with a similar pension-like program.

The program would be mandatory, would reward work because the payout would be based on paycheck deductions, and would be regularly reviewed and modified to keep it solvent.

That?s pie-in-the-sky. But what about a hybrid system that would keep investment decisions in the loop??Keep the 401(k). Make the?TSP?available to any employees who don?t have a 401(k) at work or have a lousy one.

Now, make two little tweaks:

  • Make minimum contributions mandatory. Send 10% of every paycheck to a worker?s 401(k) by law, the same way we require payroll deduction for Social Security and income tax. People would be allowed to save more, but not less.
  • End 401(k) loans and early withdrawals. Once you put the money in, you can?t get it out until retirement age. Special rules could apply to situations like total disability.

These aren?t crazy ideas. They already apply to Social Security: You can?t choose not to participate, and you can?t crack into the money early.

But this supplemental system wouldn?t be at risk of insolvency, because there?s no promised payout; it?s based on the actual investment performance of the account.

Yeah, I?m a dreamer. But as long as we have a retirement system that resembles a 30-year mortgage with a balloon payment, most Americans will undersave.

What?s crazier: Trying to change the law of the land, or the laws of human behavior?

Light cast on lifestyle and diet of first New Zealanders

May 16, 2013 ? A University of Otago-led multidisciplinary team of scientists have shed new light on the diet, lifestyles and movements of the first New Zealanders by analysing isotopes from their bones and teeth.

In research published today in the international journal PLOS ONE, the team are able to identify what is likely to be the first group of people to colonise Marlborough's Wairau Bar possibly from Polynesia around 700 years ago. They also present evidence suggesting that individuals from two other groups buried at the site had likely lived in different regions of New Zealand before being buried at Wairau Bar.

The researchers, co-ordinated by the Department of Anatomy's Associate Professor Hallie Buckley, undertook isotopic analyses of samples recovered from the koiwi tangata (human remains) of the Rangitane iwi tupuna prior to their reburial at Wairau Bar in 2009.

The Wairau Bar Koiwi Project is part of a larger archaeological project being conducted in collaboration with the Rangitane iwi, the Canterbury Museum and the University of Otago. The interpretation of these new data was strengthened by collaboration with colleagues from SPAR, the University of Otago archaeologists who undertook the more recent archaeological excavations at the site.

"By examining ratios of carbon and nitrogen isotopes present in bone collagen we were able to estimate individuals' broad dietary makeup over a 10-20 year period prior to death. Our analysis of strontium isotopes in teeth allowed us to distinguish between people growing up in geologically different landscapes," says Dr Rebecca Kinaston, who conducted the isotope analyses on the bones and teeth.

The tupuna were originally buried in three separate groups in a large village at the Wairau site. First excavated over 70 years ago, this ancient settlement is one of the most important archaeological sites in New Zealand because of its age and the range of east Polynesian type artefacts found there.

Previous research found that one of the burial groups displayed distinct cultural differences to the two other burial groups at the site. These included the positions in which they were interred and the presence of more numerous and rich grave offerings, including whale bone ornaments and moa eggs generally not found with the other two groups.

The new isotopic analysis of bone collagen and teeth suggests that members of this first group shared similar diets and childhood origins, while individuals in Groups 2 and 3 displayed highly variable diets and spent their childhood in geologically different areas to Group 1.

"Interestingly, Group 1 individuals showed a dietary trend similar to that identified in prehistoric individuals from a site in the Marquesas Islands in French Polynesia, with both sets of people sharing a low diversity in protein sources," Dr Kinaston says.

In contrast, dietary patterns in Groups 2 and 3 were found to be in line with individuals who spent most of their lives eating from a wide range of protein sources, such as would be available through New Zealand's then bountiful seal, moa and other bird populations.

The large range found in Group 2 and 3's strontium isotope ratios could reflect that they grew up in regions outside of Wairau Bar -- but not where Group 1 did -- and also that they were hunting and gathering across a wide geographical range, says Associate Professor Hallie Buckley.

"This is consistent with other archaeological evidence that the first settlers in New Zealand were highly mobile. That members of Groups 2 and 3 were still buried back at Wairau suggests that this village may have fulfilled both a ceremonial and home base function."

If this is the case, this may represent the roots of the tangihanga ritual, in which Maori are buried in their ancestral lands, developing among these first New Zealanders, Associate Professor Buckley says.

Shocking, deadly 'Grey's Anatomy' season finale

Bailey and Callie face frightening situations in the dark halls of Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital.

Shonda Rhimes recently promised "Grey's Anatomy" fans that they'd need to "hug a friend" to the weather the storm during Thursday's season finale, and the show's creator was not lying.

With a perfect storm outside and no power inside, it was one fright after another in the halls of Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital.

Oh, baby!
First, Meredith went into labor and required a C-section -- by flashlight. But no sooner was baby Bailey born than he was whisked away to NICU with Daddy McDreamy. Just one problem: Dr. Grey was still on the table, bleeding out in the dark.

"Meredith Grey has survived a bomb, a drowning, a gunman and a plane crash -- and she's still here," Cristina reminded Derek once they learned of her condition. "She's going to die when she's like 90, old and warm in her bed. She's not going to die today."

Well, thanks to quick-acting, grown-up Bailey, Cristina was right about that last part. (Whew!)

RIP, relationships
Meredith survived, but the love connection between Callie and Arizona? Not so much. Callie realized that Arizona was finding comfort in the arms of Lauren, and Arizona lashed out. It seems her decision to stray didn't have anything to do with arms, but it had everything to do with a leg -- or the lack of a leg.

Looks like that partnership is as dead as Owen and Cristina's. (Yeah, that happened too.)

Noooooooooooo!
There are worse deaths -- like the one that seemed to befall one beloved character.

In an effort to restore the power, Dr. Webber went down to fix the electrical situation with a simple flip of a switch. Unfortunately, electricity and the puddle Richard was standing in just didn't mix. He was last seen lying very still, eyes closed, wrapped in smoldering clothes.

Of course, no one was around to call the time of death, so there's still hope. (Right?!)

Name-calling may be just the tip of the iceberg: Take fast action to ...

If you are receiving reports that a manager or supervisor is engaging in name-calling, look beyond the obvious problem. It just may be that discrimination is a pervasive problem. It?s your job to bring it to light before it?s too late.

Consider this recent case, in which a supervisor was not just calling his subordinate names, but perhaps also engaging in age, religious, national origin and other discrimination.

Recent case: Nidal is a Muslim American of Palestinian origin over the age of 50. Over the course of two stints, he worked as the business manager in the finance department of an auto dealership. He was fired the first time when a new management team decided Nidal?s $20,000 per month pay was too high. He was then rehired at a lower base pay.

Nidal claimed that during this second period of employment, which lasted about half a year, he was regularly subjected to name-calling. For example, he said that his supervisor regularly called him ?towelhead,? ?rag??head,? ?rock thrower,? and ?f***ing? Palestinian or Muslim. Plus, he endured comments about food smelling like ?camel s***? and being a ?s***head.? He was also referred to as the ?old man,? and work-related oversights were blamed on his age.

In court documents, Nidal would later say that to avoid the constant name-calling, he locked himself into his office and tried to avoid interacting with co-workers as much as possible. He likened the office to a ?war zone? and said he felt trapped when the supervisor insisted on entering his office to talk. Nidal also said that while the taunts didn?t actually affect his work, he did feel stressed and emotionally scarred by it.

Nonetheless, he continued to earn bonuses and hit performance targets. Plus, he received good reviews for his customer service.

Then, after the company allegedly received customer complaints about his finance practices, his supervisor fired him.

Nidal sued, alleging he had been forced to work in a hostile work environment and had been terminated because of his age, race or other protected characteristics.

The auto dealership tried several legal tactics. First, it argued that the name-calling wasn?t so bad that a reasonable employee would perceive it as harassment. Plus, it was clear that Nidal?s performance hadn?t been affected.

The court said Nidal had a case. First, the name-calling was frequent and severe and a hypothetical reasonable employee might very well have perceived it as harassment. Plus, the employer wasn?t let off the hook just because Nidal?s actual performance didn?t suffer. Experiencing emotional distress is enough. The case will now go to a jury. (Alzuraqi v. Group I Automotive, No. 3:12-CV-223, ND TX, 2013)

Final note: Never tolerate offensive name-calling. If an employee reports such problems, investigate immediately and thoroughly. Ask other em??ployees what they have heard. (In this case, several co-workers confirmed Nidal?s basic account, although they said they heard the name-calling less frequently than he reported.)

If your investigation confirms a problem, immediately take steps to stop it. Discipline the employees. Then check for any later retaliation. Plus, make sure that any subsequent disciplinary action against the em??ployee is grounded in carefully documented facts.

Ingo Rademacher and his "Dancing With the Stars" pro partner Kym Johnson.

Getting cut just before the finals is tough, but Ingo Rademacher didn?t see any other realistic option regarding his ejection from "Dancing With the Stars" Tuesday night.

?It would have been amazing to dance in the finals,? the soap hunk told reporters after the semifinals results show. ?But if we?d have gotten to the finals, then somebody would have been really upset because they all deserve a spot there.?

Rademacher said he would have stepped up to the plate if he had made it through, however.

?I would have switched into a whole other gear,? he mused. ?(Kym Johnson and I) would have shown some dances that would have proved that we deserved to be there.?

The former "General Hospital" star continued, ?In a way, I?m a little disappointed we didn?t get to do that, but I?m more relieved. I?m 80 percent relieved because my knees are really hurting me! I need to sit down!?

On a more serious note, Rademacher?s proud of his accomplishment with the show.

?I learned you can really do anything if you spend enough time at it,? he said. ?I couldn?t believe that every time I?d come back (after being called safe), and on Wednesday, Kym would show me a new routine. I?d think there?s no way I can do that. And then, I?d end up doing it by Monday. You surprise yourself. You do it and it?s amazing.?

Rademacher credits Johnson with him making it as far as he did in the competition.

?We didn?t waste a lot of time fighting and bickering,? he explained. ?Kym always came prepared. That was really, really good. Our rehearsals were well-organized.?

Rademacher has no immediate plans to return to "GH," where he played heartthrob Jasper Jacks on and off since the mid-90s.

For now, he?s set to hit the waves in Hawaii in a 32-mile stand-up paddle board race.

?I?m going back to train for that for two months,? he said. ?If (?GH?) calls after that, I?m always ready to come back.?

AUBURN, Indiana ? Auctions America continued its 2013 season this past weekend with its annual Auburn Spring collector car weekend at the historic Auburn Auction Park in Auburn, Indiana. The highly successful auction, which included automobiles, motorcycles and memorabilia, generated more than $5.7 million* in total sales with over 77 percent of all lots sold. Bringing together the collector car community to celebrate all things automotive, bidders hailed from seven countries around the world and 38 states across the U.S., with nearly one-third of participants representing new clientele.

Following a spirited round of bidding, top sale honors at the Auburn Spring event went to an AACA National First Prize winning 1930 Packard 745 Dual Cowl Phaeton, beautifully presented in black with green leather interior and a black convertible top. Fitted with the desirable ?Super 8? engine and benefitting from a well-preserved, first-rate restoration, the Packard achieved a strong $198,000 to applause from the crowd. A stunning 1931 Auburn 8-98 Boattail Speedster also attracted enthusiastic bidding, realizing $159,500, while a fully-equipped 1967 Shelby GT500 Fastback took third spot, garnering $121,000.

The highly anticipated selection of automobiles from the distinguished estate collection of John Soneff also sold well to a lively Saturday crowd. The top sale of the collection went to a resplendent black 1950 Hudson Commodore 8 Convertible Brougham for $112,200.

The Auburn Spring weekend also offered a number of attractions to suit any collector car enthusiast. Along with the swap meet and car corral presented exclusively by Carlisle Events, visitors to the Auction Park were thrilled with the chance to meet Richard Rawlings, star of Discovery?s hit TV show, Fast N? Loud during two Saturday autograph sessions. The weekend was also host to the inaugural Antique Automobile Club of America Central Division National Spring Meet, which proved to be an exciting new attraction for AACA members and attendees alike.

?Thanks to a great team effort by the staff of Auctions America and AACA, our inaugural Central Division Spring Meet was a resounding success! We had almost 250 cars registered, 400 well-fed people at our banquet, and numerous empty wallets from attending the auction (and a few fat ones from selling)!? said Steve Moskowitz, Executive Director, AACA following the event. ?The reaction from our members and the public alike was astounding. We look forward to an ongoing relationship with Auctions America and a continued presence at Auburn, and extend our sincere thanks to both the Auctions America team and naturally, to all our volunteers.?

?We could not have been happier with the turn out of the AACA?s inaugural meet at Auburn Spring,? adds Donnie Gould, president, Auctions America. ?The impressive showing, along with very strong interest from bidders both nationally and abroad certainly took us one big step further in putting Auburn back on the map as the classic car capital of America. We look forward to welcoming clients back to the Auburn Auction Park for our annual flagship event, the Auburn Fall collector car weekend, August 29 ? September 1.?
