In Stage 4 disease, the cancer has spread to other organs such as liver.

The staging of colon cancer is important since the prognosis of affected individual is highly dependent on the staging of cancer. For example, patients diagnosed with Stage 1 colon cancer have overall 5-year survival rate of 93%. On the other hand, those diagnosed with stage 4 cancer can only expect 7% survival rate at 5 year.

For cancer that has not spread, the surgery is the treatment of choice. In fact, surgery may be the only treatment necessary for patients with Stage 1 or 2 disease. However, some with Stage 2 disease may elect to receive chemotherapy. Following surgery, Stage 3 cancer requires chemotherapy, usually for about 6 months. The most commonly used chemotherapy is called FOLFOX regimen consisting of 5-FU, leucovorin, and oxaliplatin. Some may also elect to receive additional treatment with a new class of thearpy such as Erbitux or Avastin. Treatment for Stage 4 disease has to be individualized as a complete cure is unlikely, although many often also receive surgery and chemotherapy.

Following these treatment, careful follow-up is recommended even when the cancer is believed to be in complete remission. Thus, periodic evaluations including routine blood tests including CEA, CT scan and colonoscopy are advised.

The best treatment of colon cancer is, of course, prevention. The most effective and proven treatment option is performing colonoscopy, starting at the age of 50. All adults of this age are highly advised to undergo this life-saving procedure.

Spain regions, doctors defy immigrant healthcare ban

MADRID (Reuters) - Some Spanish doctors and regions say they will defy a ban on free healthcare for an estimated 150,000 undocumented immigrants, imposed by the central government as part of spending cuts to avoid an international bailout.

Five of Spain's 17 autonomous regions - including Catalonia and Andalucia which provide more than a third of national economic output and are not governed by the central government's ruling People's Party (PP) - said they would continue to treat immigrants who have no papers.

The ruling conservatives plan to end free treatment from the beginning of September as part of their austerity drive, aimed at cutting one of the euro zone's largest budget deficits and convincing nervous investors they can control Spain's finances.

Critics say the number of immigrants without papers is estimated at only about 150,000, so barring them from medical treatment would save very little and was pandering to prejudice.

"The new law is not ethical, it's not cost efficient, and it makes no sense for the public health system. It's based on myths that immigrants are abusing the system that are not true," said Alvaro Gonzalez, a specialist at a hospital in the northern region of Asturias who has led opposition to the measure.

The nearly 6 million documented immigrants in Spain, most of them legal residents, account for only 5 percent of the country's healthcare costs, according to a study by La Caixa bank published last year.

Some doctors in PP-ruled regions also reject a ban which they say is at odds with Spain's universal healthcare service and could end up costing the state more if immigrants go to hospital emergency rooms instead of seeing a regular doctor.

The Spanish Society for Family and Community Medicine, which initiated the campaign against the PP ban, says more than 1,400 doctors have signed up, including 22 percent of primary health providers from the PP-governed region of Madrid.

Regions not controlled by the PP have used the ban as a focus for their opposition to central government spending cuts.

Andalucia, ruled by the Socialist Party, hopes the government will change its stance by September, when public workers and labor unions plan protests against spending cuts.

"We are talking about people here, and a universal, free healthcare system that cannot change from one day to the next to stop treating these people," Maria Jesus Montero, head of Andalucia's health department, told Reuters.

She said the region was committed to making cuts to reduce its deficit, but not in healthcare and education, which were 'red lines' the central government could not cross.

It's here: the first Android-powered camera, and it's one that you'd actually consider buying. Nikon's $349.95 Coolpix S800c is nearly as slim as a smartphone from the middle of last decade, boasting inbuilt GPS (you know, for excessive geotagging), a 10x optical zoom lens, 16 megapixel BSI CMOS sensor, 3.5-inch OLED WVGA touchscreen, a 1080p movie capture mode and Android 2.3. That's right -- there's a bona fide copy of Android running the show on a point-and-shoot camera, something that it seems Nikon beat Samsung to the punch with. Put simply, it possesses the ability to generate its own network and tether with your phone, and users can also download photo sharing applications directly onto the cam's 4GB of internal storage. Needless to say, we're anxiously awaiting our chance to see how Android handles on a camera (and how it impacts battery life), and you can find out yourself when it hits shelves in black / white motifs next month.

It's only fitting that as we get closer to finally realizing the dream of cars that can fly, their two-wheeled counterparts are also getting off the ground. A company called Aerofex has created a flying "motorcycle" based on an abandoned 1960 era design that could one day be sold in showrooms.

The design that Aerofex has chosen for its hover bike was originally given up on more than 40 years ago because engineers couldn't find a way to keep it from tipping over. Their current-day counterparts have evidently found a relatively simple mechanical fix for the problem, which allows riders to shift their weight side to side in order to prevent rollovers. After all, it's important to maintain control when you're traveling at 30 mph up to 15 feet above the ground, as the current prototype is capable of doing.

Although it has a human-piloted version of the bike up-and-running, Aerofex is actually planning to use the technology to develop unmanned, robotic hovering platforms that can be used to transport gear and supplies for military use. Due to the contraption's narrow size and enclosed rotors, it's being looked at as an ideal solution for use in urban environments where space is tight and traditional helicopter rotor blades would be far too dangerous.
