It was a tornado many experienced, and lived to talk about it.
Now two local artists hope to give you a feeling of what it was like.
One of them, Mobile artist Riley Brenes, explained how the project came to be.
"We drove through Midtown and saw how intense it was," Riley said.
This is not the first time Riley has installed a piece of art at 401 Dauphin Street.
He now considers the donated empty store front his impromptu gallery.
But this is the first time his artwork has been inspired by a tornado... a tornado that hit too close to home.
"And we both decided that we had to do something for these people," he said. "So we came here and sketched for a few hours and came up with a concept."
Fellow artist Shane Reynolds joined Brenes for this disastrous installation, which will premier during Friday night's Loda Art Walk.
And if they are successful, visitors will experience many of the same emotions that tore through the lives of those who endured the storm.
"Eventually you will be right in the house," said Shane. "We put you right into what people were going through when the storm was going over the house."
Bringing additional reality to this artistic storm?
The material used.
It's real, respectfully collected by the artists and their friends.
"There were couches and beds," Shane explained, "children's toys, too. Because it happened on Christmas, you know. All of the wrappings were out there. It was pretty intense."
It might be easy to mistake Novus Ventus for a cauldron of dispair. But the artists say you'd be missing the point.
This is a new beginning for Midtown Mobile and those affected by the storm.
It's a beginning, they say, that only works if everyone takes part.
Ventus Novus, "New Wind" will premier Friday night from 6 until 9 pm during the LoDa Artwalk at 401 Dauphin Street, next to Hoffman's Furniture.
There will be an art auction, and all money raised and any donations will be given to art organizations affected by the storm.
